[RESOLVED] incremental backup recovery confusion

Thread needs solution

I just tried to recover a partition backup with 6 incremental files and received error 70020. The log indicates archive is corrupt but doesn't indicate which incremental file contains the corruption. I just ran the validator against the tib files and no errors reported. The backup contains multiple partitions but I only need the primary OS boot partition.

Is the correct method to restore a backup configured as incremental to restore all files by selecting the last one or am I supposed to restore the full backup and then do each incremental one by one?

Thanks for any help here.

Michael

The correct method is to restore the last file. ATI will take care of the rest.
Sometimes, ATI loses track of some file. Look at the backup destination, right click on the tib files you want to recover, choose archives -> validate. If the validation goes through, you are in good shape.

Boot the computer on the recovery CD, in the home menu, choose recover disk and partitions, browse to the backup you want to recover, click next.

Remember that the boot CD will show you drive letters different from Windows when browsing to the backup and choosing the destination of the restore. Don't get confused and look attentively at the disk labels, not the drive letters.

Thanks for your reply Pat. I restored the C partition and had to choose D: as the C: drive letter was not displayed, Acronis said C: -> D: so I don't know if now the drive letter has changed. I rebooted and now have "Operations are in progress. Please wait." displayed and this has been running for several hours. The drive light blinks so the system is doing something but I have no idea what.

Any ideas what these operations are? I don't think Windows Update would have had time to download an update but its a possibility.

Thanks!

Michael

I finally just did a cold boot. Now CHKDSK and F8 to safe mode don't work. Something is not right after the restore. I'll create another post for this.

Michael,

Don't worry about drive letters. The operations in progress message is from Acronis, most likely. It could be a validation or a backup on startup?

Remember Michael, that the CD doesnt show you the same drive letter as Windows. I am a bit worried when you say

I restored the C partition and had to choose D: as the C: drive letter was not displayed, Acronis said C: -> D: so I don't know if now the drive letter has changed

You have to look at the drive label (eg "System" or "OS"), not the drive letter (eg C:)

Thanks Pat. I meant I restored the OS partition so that worked out. I cold booted after Operation in progress for about 4 hours. This should be optional, that was quite the waste of time.

Now I can't run CHKDSK or F8 to Safe Mode menu, I posted about this problem in a separate thread. I think it has to do with a partition GUID being changed but am not sure how to repair it. I consider these two features crucial to ongoing use of Windows, given it's propensity to get NTFS errors etc.

Thanks for your help!

This issue is now closed. I figured out how to create all partitions manually with the correct specs and restored successfully. F8 to Safe Mode now works. Chkdsk still doesn't run when scheduled for reboot but I can run it from command prompt in the Repair Options off the Safe Mode menu. Not ideal but I have to get on with my life. Thanks for everyone's help on this!
