[RESOLVED] Rescue media 2011 bld 6857 turns off computer
Well this is a first for me after years of having success with making rescue disks , I have my first problem. I just updated from 2011, build 6695 to
Build 6857 and made a rescue disk and tried to test it by making an image. With about 1 minute to go in step 2 out of 3 it turns off my computer. I see nothing at all in the folder where I am adding it. I tried making another rescue disk wiuth the same results.
I tried the check for updates and let TI update from bld 6696 to bld 6857, could this be my problem?
Operating system is Win7, build 6696 worked fine.
Issue resolved here.

thank-you Yana , I have since noticed that there is a newer build so I updated to that with the same results. I then decided to try my old rescue disk which worked previously, also with the same results, I am now thinking that it is my computer, but I am at a loss what the trouble could be, I am going to try a memory tester and see how that works.

Well making the system report was easy enough, but trying to find the right place to send it using your link was not so easy. I ended up emailing support and attaching a copy of the report.

I ran memtest for 16 hours and no errors found, now I am wondering if it could possibly be my DVD rom.
Has anybody else had this problem?

Maybe you can produce a bootable flash disk and try it.

Thanks for that Pat, I tried making a bootable flash drive and was almost finished when my flash drive started acting up. It seems to be toast now. I live out in the sticks and do not have easy access to a place that sells flash drives so I will have to wait for a bit.
Did you make a bootable flash drive for your win 7 ?
If so did you try the grub 0.4.4 method by mudcrab or did you use another method?

Yes, I produced a flash drive. In fact, I use an old compact flash card in a USB adapter. It behaves like a flash drive. I produced various versions on normal USB flash drives. It is faster than a DVD. I produced them with ATI out of the box without any issue.
Some users have had some issue with producing bootable flash drives. These users were able to work around the issues with the grub thingy.

I downloaded some win 7 updates I think one was to fix some types of usb drives I will see what happens when I get a chance.
I noticed it messed with my wireless usb modem, so just maybe.

Well no luck with that. I have another flash drive to try and will report back with results.
This is my first time trying to boot with a flash drive if anybody could supply me with some help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Denis

dbknox, if you can't produce a bootable flash drive with ATI out of the box, you can try this:

Thanks for the help Pat, I made a UBB "right out of the box" I.e. an "ios" file and had to copy it to my flash drive, I couldn't find any way for TI to make it on the flash drive I then went into my BIOS and set the USB for the first boot order, no luck, I will check into your link when I find time ( summer is so busy in cottage country) I am also going to try making the flash drive with Nero.
I will report back if/when I get a chance.

If you produce an ISO file you have to use themudcrab method to make it work.
To produce the bootable flash drive out of the box, you need to select the target flash drive in the create bootable recovery medium wizard, not the ISO output option.

Thanks again Pat, I certainly appreciate your help the link you sent me was very helpful. I have made a bootable flash drive using the " out of the box" option, I am afraid I had a senior moment earlier, thinking all I needed was an iso file ( I do know better). THe problem I have now is setting my bios to boot from the flash drive. I set the USB as boot 1 and chose the "zip" usb. then picked the cd as the second and the hard drive as third. With no luck.
I have Phoenix Technologies LT06.00 PG 06/25/2007 bois does anybody know the settings I need for this?
When I look at the bios it does show the usb to be the first, I am obviosly doing something wrong!

Can you try your USB flash drive to boot another computer? I just want to make sure the creation was successful.

I would have to change their bios and I am not sure they would want me to do that. I am certain that it is a good boot USB it looks the same as my rescue cd when I explore it. Do you plug your usb drive into the front USB plugs? Should I try the back I wonder?
I will keep trying to sort it out.
I wish I knew why my rescue CD's are not working. I may have to try a new DVD rom drive. Mine has had a lot of use.

The rear connector is the preferred but the front should work. What other choice did you have when you chose the USB HD zip option in the BIOS? If there was another choice, try it.
Ifl you believe your CD may not be good, another option would be to create an ISO file rather than a CD but use a different program to burn the CD. The free ImgBurn program does a really good job of burning a CD and checking it for errors.

Hi again GroverH , always good to hear from you. I have a TI 11 rescue CD ( 2 of them) and Bartpe cd ( made with TI 11) and 3 different blds of 2011,of which 2 worked before the last bld and when I tested the last rescue CD ( 2011 bld 6868 ) the rescue cd was showing less then a minute to go when my computer shuts off. ( all the recue cd's are now doing this). Hence the reason I was trying to make a Rescue media on a flash drive. I have two choices USB zip or USB FDD which I will be trying later today and will report back.
I have run Memtest for over 12 hours ( no errors) that was my first thought seeing as how the rescue cd is loaded into and runs from the ram memory. Now I am suspecting my DVD ram drive. But if I could get the flash drive to boot, I think that would help point in a direction for me to investigate further.
I am also thinking maybe I should try a "verify" with the rescue cd and see what results from that.

I can validate ( not verify) okay using all the CD rescue media.
I changed the USB boot to USB FDD in my BIOS still no change.
I opened the boot menu and see only CD and Hard drive so I may have to try grub.

If the failure is in the creation of the backup and you have tried several CD with the same failure repeated, the issue is probably not the CD.
Have you tested both the source and target disk for disk errors?
From a Windows command prompt
CHKDSK x: /R (x=actual drive letter)

Thanks for that GroverH I have to admit that never crossed my mind. I have a USB hard drive and a second internal hard drive. I will try doing an image of my second drive to the external drive and see wht happens.
- Accedi per poter commentare
well GroverH and Pat, I was able to image from my second internal drive to my USB hard drive. So I did a repair on my C drive and still no luck. ( that is rescue media to second internal drive) I should mention that I have been trying to image to the internal second drive using the rescue disk and never thought to try to the external drive. Then I tried from my "C" drive to the external and that worked.
So I will be trying a disk check on the second internal drive.
I never thought about disk errors because I am able to image to the second internal drive using TI from windows. Is this strange or am I missing something?
I am going away for a few days and I will report back after checking for errors on the second drive.
I have not given up on the flash drive either.

We have seen other users having trouble imaging to an internal disk. This is weird.

Well after a very long time trying to figure out what the problem was and having no success, I was encoding some video when lo and behold my computer shut down. That immediately gave me a clue to my problem. Over heating. I took my computer in to a friend of mine that has a supplier he deals with and added a new and better fan and the problem is fixed. ( noth imaging and encoding. )
I figured I would make sure to post this fix in case anybody else was having similar problems.
