[RESOLVED] wt image laptop drive 640gb to 750gb error "insufficient space in recovery destination"
640GB 2.5" Toshiba MK6465GSX being replaced with a 750GB 2.5" Seagate ST9750420AS.
I have connected by USB 2.0 the Toshiba drive and make a image of the drive which has a 100MB recovery partition and a 596.1GB OS/data partition. The system is a Gateway GT5428 and is running Visa Home 32bit. I make the tib image on the C: drive of the Gateway computer.
I then added the Seagate drive to the Gateway via USB 2.0 port and tried to restore.
Under the Gateway Computer Management Disk Management app it shows the Seagate drive as Online Disk 5 698.64GB and Unallocated.
I tried restoring the image of the Toshiba with the Seagate as Unallocated, as a RAW partition and as a formated NTFS partition. Each time I get the error "insufficient space in recovery destination".
This should not be this difficult. I am trying to image a 640GB drive to a 750GB drive. I am starting to feel like I am using the wrong software?
Issue resolved here.

>>>Are you trying to do this from within Windows or from the Recovery CD?
I am doing this from a Vista Gateway Desktop, the Tosiba drives is out of a laptop, the seagate drive is the replacement drive.
>>>As this is a system drive, it is better to start from the Recovery CD. You may need to select the 'Add Drive' option from within True Image before attempting to recover.
Are you sure. I have removed the laptop drive and connected it via USB 2.0. to another computer (Gateway Desktop) Why would I need to use a recovery CD?
>>>When you made your image did you tick the complete disk option 9which will include any hidden partitions) or just tick the individual partitions
Yes, I selected "switch to disk mode" before I did the backup.
Thanks for you help.

Does your PC have internal card reader?
Is your drive attached via an external USB hub or do you have a hub connected even if not used?
Have you tried attaching to a different USB port, preferably one on the rear of the PC as these are more likely to be attached directly to the internal hub?
The reason I asked if you had tried to do this using the recovery CD, is an attempt to work out if you are having a Windows problem, or a hardware problem. Apart from which, you will need to make a recovery CD at some time and test it, because if your drive dies, that will be your life line.
The problem is that the True Image error messages aren't precise and the system tends to choose the one closest to what it thinks is the problem. The error message you are seeing can mean there is a driver clash, there is a problem actually accessing the drive, or, there is something about the disk structure either on the new drive or within the image that is causing TI to have a problem.
Are you able to mount the image from within TI in Windows and does it seem to be correct in its contents?
Do Gateway PCs have a standard disk alignment?
Is one disk GPT and the other MBR in type?
Are there any hidden partitions (such as Gateway utility or OS recovery partitions), that might not be accounted for?
Have you tried connecting the drive to a different Sata port and with a different cable?
As this is a recovery problem, you are entitled to support at no extra charge by Acronis, so I would suggest you run an Acronis system report from True Image, and raise a support ticket if none of the above suggestions work for you.

>>>Does your PC have internal card reader?
No why
>>>Is your drive attached via an external USB hub or do you have a hub connected even if not used?
No hub at all.
>>>Have you tried attaching to a different USB port, preferably one on the rear of the PC as these are more likely to be attached directly to the internal hub?
Yes.

I will try that now.
>>>Are you able to mount the image from within TI in Windows and does it seem to be correct in its contents?
Let me try that.
>>>Do Gateway PCs have a standard disk alignment?
I only have one disk on the Gateway box.
>>>Is one disk GPT and the other MBR in type?
which disks? I have my gateway hd, my laptop old drive, my laptop new drive.
>>>Are there any hidden partitions (such as Gateway utility or OS recovery partitions), that might not be accounted for?
No, there is on the gateway 2 partitions and they both show, same with the laptop drive two partitions.
>>>Have you tried connecting the drive to a different Sata port and with a different cable?
hrmm, that is an idea. Let me try that.

Thanks!

Ok, I opened up the Gateway box and added the Seagate drive to the mobo direct instead of going through a SATA to USB and connecting to the Gateway USB port. Thanks for that tip, d0h, I should have thought of that myself!
