Restore damaged incremental backup

Thread needs solution

Hi everyone,

I used TrueImage with the incremental-Backup method, meaning that on my external HDD
a big initial backup and several incremental backup files were created.

Sadly, the HDD had some kind of damage and in the end (wich i - of course - noticed when my primary disk crashed and i needed the backup), i lost my initial backup file (data recovery did not work). Now I'm standing here with some incremental files (wich i was able to recover) and try to get some of my lost data out of them.

Is there any way to recover files stored in the incremental backups?

Yeah, i tried to open them wit TrueImage, but (of course) TrueImage wants to open the initial backup files etc... and when i'm finished with clicking on cancel, the image explorer shows me nothing.... any way to at least partly restore some data?

Thanks for your help!

regards,
Arthur

If the first backup (the full backup, which is the baseline for subsequent incrementals) is missing, then you cannot restore.

You should not allow an incremental chain to become too long. An incremental restore depends upon every incremental in the chain being valid, including the original full. It's better to limit each chain to just a few incrementals, followed by a fresh full backup to start a new chain.

You should validate backups periodically. That would have alerted you much sooner if the full backup were missing or unreadable.
