Restore did not resize partitions on replaced C drive

Thread needs solution

My C drive crashed. I bought a bigger one to replace it. I booted from the rescue CD, restored from the backup. All fine, except I have an unallocated partition of 316GB because the restore did not expand the partitions. I guess I missed a step somewhere. I don't think I can expand the C drive partition into the unallocated space because there is a "System Reserved" partition (R drive) between them. Do I need to do the restore over? What should I have done?

The "system reserved" partition needs to be moved/resizsed so it it placed to the right margin (end) of the unallocated space. Then expand the C partition into the newly position unallocated space.

I believe this can be done via Windows 7 (if installed) or you can download the free program below and perform the resize when booted from the Partition Wizard Bootable CD. I do not have Win7 so cannot be more specific about what Win7 can do. This can also be done with the Acronis Disk Director if you have access to it.

Also, index item 3-M example 1 , might be an explanation for your initial results of unallocated space.

Yup, that fixed it. W7 will allow me to expand the "system reserved" partition, but it won't allow me to shrink it (except to its original place on the disk). W7 Disk Management appears to have no ability to relocate the files. However I have EASEUS Partition Master (free) installed and this allowed me to follow the steps you described. 1: expand the system reserved to take up all the unallocated space; 2: shrink it back (it moves to the end of the disk); 3: expand the C: drive partition to take up the new unallocated space. On reboot, Partition Master moves everything around and reboots twice. All fixed.

Thanks for your help.
