Restore from disk clone on ext. USB-HD
Hello,
Before cloning a laptop disk to an ext. USB-HD I have this question:
Some time ago my laptop crashed: after power on, only a short error message and the system shuts down again. Windows 8.1 wouldn't start anymore.
In such a case, is it possible to restore the system disk from a clone on a external USB-HD to the laptop disk, using the Acronis True Image 2014 boot disk?
F.I. by selecting the USB drive as source disk and the (crashed) sytem disk as destination disk?
Thanks for any tips.

Let me understand. You want to clone the laptop's internal HD to an external USB HD (what your first sentence said). Then you want to clone from the external USB HD to the laptop's internal HD? I guess you intend doing the first step in preparation for a disaster, and the second step to recover from the disaster. I recommend that a full disk mode backup, in fact multiple full disk mode backups from various dates, would be a far better disaster recovery plan.
Clone is not the ideal solution. It is riskier and can result in a loss of data and a failed system. Create a full disk mode backup and restore it, using the bootable Rescue Media, to the new disk, as it's far safer and simpler. Plus, you may retain multiple full disk mode backup on a single external HD, giving you much greater security and more options for recovery.

Yes, the first step is meant to have an exact copy of the laptop's HD.
I've experienced several OS (Windows) crashes in the past after updates.
I'm not certain that I can restore my laptop when the OS has crashed.
I just want to be sure that I can restore from an external device in case of an OS-crash or a hardware crash (int. HD)
Thanks you for pointing me to the 'full disk mode backup' as a solution.
Got some reading to do . .

You absolutely can restore a full disk mode backup from an external HD. I store dozens of full disk mode backups, from various dates, on an external USB HD. I have restored from it to my internal HD many times. It's definitely the way to go, both simpler and safer than clone, and provides far greater security and redundancy than a single cloned drive.

Created a full disk backup as suggested, thanks for the support!
