Restore email.tib from old XP system to new vista system
My old XP machine died of a hardware failure, and I have now installed Office 2003 on the new Vista Home system. It's the same Office suite I used on the old computer. My outlook e-mail history is saved as an ATI 2009 .tib file.
I want to restore it to a folder on the new machine so I can get to my .pst files containing my e-mail history and contacts and put them where they belong. Every time I run restore, the only option I can get is to restore it to the original location. How can I get my files back so I can at least copy the parts of it that I need?
Thanks,
Rusty

You can only mount backups of full partitions, so unfortunately, that won't work for an e-mail backup. Thanks for the good guess though.

Are you able to explore the tib file?
If you can, then perhaps Outlook could be persuaded to import the pst information.
You also should be able to drag and drop it into a folder of your choosing (apart from where your current pst file resides), then either point Outlook to the new pst location, or, from Windows safe mode copy the old pst file to where the current pst file is located.
However as this is a different OS and a new install, the old pst file might have the original security identifiers attached to it, which won't be recognised by Windows on your new install. The trick here will be to attach the old PST file to your new user credentials that are now being used. This can also be done whilst in safe mode.

Thanks for the tip about permissions, I can handle that if I can just get to the files. However ATI has already politely informed me that .tib backups can only be explored if they have a partition (or some such message).
I'll keep hacking away at it. I'm still open to ideas.

I've been through and through the Acronis help files for "restore e-mail archive", and cannot find how to select a destination folder anywhere. If I continue, with "original location" selected, Acronis will go through the motions of restoring the file and say, Operation Completed Successfully. I have searched the whole machine(with Folder options > Tools> Show hidden and system files), and find no .pst or .dbx files anywhere.
I have tried restoring the .tib that resides on the external drive and the identical copy that resides on the system drive in a desktop folder.
Still no success.

I think the F&F option expects to be restored to the same system, have you tried the reallocating of permissions?

Yes, I clicked on the file and went to: Properties > security > advanced > owner > etc. and made sure I had full access.

Hello all,
Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]
Rusty,
The e-mail backup can be restored to the default directory only, you are unable to recover the archive to a different place. Since the directories in Windows XP and Windows Vista are different, you are unable to restore the archive to a different operating system.
Do you have a backup of the system partition? You can try to exclude the .pst file and place it to the necessary folder manually.
Thank you.

Yes, problem solved last week. Sorry it took so long for me to reply.
I had to do what I was avoiding. I had an old clunky noisy drive where I had stored a couple of images just-in -case. I opened up the case and plugged it in to the IDE port and had an image of the system that I had made the day before the system failed. How lucky is that!
I was able to explore it and copy the .PST files and voila, a seamless e-mail history, contacts and calander dating back to 2005. Lesson learned; everything is potentially useless except for full backups... including a false sense of security.
Thanks for your reply. Now I am off to post a new thread about another problem(I'll stretch the forum rules and write it here too). ATI caused all of my removable media to disappear from Vista's Computer view in Windows Explorer. I had to uninstall ATI last night to fix that. I hope I will be able to use it without re-installing and uninstalling every time I want to run a backup.

Hello Rusty,
Thank you for your response.
[quota]ATI caused all of my removable media to disappear from Vista's Computer view in Windows Explorer.[/quota]
What is the build number of your product? You can check it navigating mouse cursor to upper line of the program then press ALT + left mouse button -> Help -> About.
The issue you have experienced is related to an outdated build of Acronis True Image Home 2009. Please download and install the latest build #9769 of the program, the issue should disappear.
You can learn more on how to download the latest build here.
Thank you.

Oleg, this thread is about my Outlook e-mail. The thread you are writing about is http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3289, where I discuss a problem with my removable media. If you will read that topic, you will see in my first post that I am using 9796. You are also saying I need build number 9769; which is it? In that thread, Mudcrab suggested I try to use a copy of #9709, which seems to have less bugs.
The problem I had in this thread, as I stated in post number 9 has been resolved.
I am going to copy your post over to that thread where we can discuss it in its proper context.
Yhanks for your reply.
