Restore file: Outlook.pst has wrong size

Thread needs solution

Hi.

- Acronis True Image Home PlusPack
- I backed up: full backup
- backup was successful
- now, I need to recover my OUTLOOK.PST which originally had 1,6 TB
- I restore my file from my backup. No problem, no error message
- but: the restored file is sized 150 MB file only.
- Trying to open my Outlook with that file does not accept file as guilty (that's logic)

Sorry for my english: I'm german :-)

Any ideas? Thank you for your help,
Sven Mueller

1.6 terabytes, really? Did you mean 1.6GB?

If you have done a diskand partition backup, you should be able to mount it. Then navigate to your Outlook file and verify you are looking at the right one.

Oh, I'm sorry: my Outlook.pst normally had 1,6 GB. You are right. But after my restore, it only has 150 MB, so there are many contents missing. And if I open this file with Outlook 2003, it gives me a message, that this file would not be a personl folder, so this file seems to be corrupt and I can't open it in Outlook.

I am looking for the right file in my backup (local settings, application data, Microsoft, Outlook).

Any further ideas?
Thank you all,
Sven

Hi.

Okay, now I checked the following: I wanted to restore the whole machine based on the backup, but: the backup started writing on my disk, afterwards it broke down, the system rebooted without finding any operating system, so: my backup was NOT okay :-|

Doesn't matter: I restored another backup (a few days older), but what I really would need is my Outlook.pst out of my inconsistent backup. Is there any way to recover my mail file out of that backup, which is not consistent?

Thank you for your opinions,
Sven

There are four ways to make sure a file is in a disk and partition backup, short of actually restoring the entire partition:
- from ATI in windows, you can click on "explore all versions", then click on the squares at the bottom of the window that pops up, and then navigate the folder hierarchy until you find your file,
- from ATI in Windows, you can double click on the backup and navigate your way to the folder you need,
- from ATI in Windows, you can mount the image,
- from the ATI on the recovery CD, you can choose to recover specific files and folders, etc.

Is it possible that your Outlook file is not under the default directory? Sometimes, users choose to put their Outlook file somewhere else on the computer and the Outlook.pst that remains in the default directory is an obsolete one...

You can mount the archive in Windows and use Windows search to search the mounted disk for any *.pst

Hi.
Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, I do have the right path for my Outlook-File: it's crazy:

I just restored a backup from August 2011 -> my Outlook.pst had 1,6 GB that month.

Then I backed up 14.11.2011.

Today, I browse my backed up TIB-File and find my Outlook.pst in ATI-Explorer -> only 1 GB is displayed there. I then recover that file (drag' n drop from ATI-Browser to Explorer), then the file is recovered, but only has 150 MB file size :-(
I did it twice, but the recovery process always breaks down much too early (normally, he should recover about 2 hours for that file, but after 5 min it ends the recovery process) and the recovered file is only 150 MB and does not work with Outlook.

So, my next try was to start ATIH2010, I choose my backup and start a recovery of that file out of ATIH2010. What seems funny to me: In Acronis browsing the same file OUTLOOK.PST shows me a file size of 1,6 GB (not 1 GB as out of my explorer) ??? Okay. I then recovered that file (also to a different drive). Result out of ATIH2010 also after a few minutes: "Recovery of "Outlook.pst" failed. But the file, he recovered shows a file size of 1,6 GB. If I try to open that file in Outlook 2003, the following error occurs - translated out of german: "Microsoft Office outlook can't be started. The Outlook-Window could not be opened. This folder group could not be opened. The server is not online. Please ask your system administrator (OK -> that's me :-(.

My next try: I restarted my computer using the ATIH2010-DVD and booted from that CD. I then recovered my Outlook.pst. No file size was shown in that program while browsing and choosing the file, which is to be recovered. Okay. The recovery also started again and showed a duration of 4 hours, which got less after some time, but: after about 3 minutes I again got the error message: Recovery of file or folder "Outlook.pst" failed :-( Also a retry wasn't successful. After my reboot, I found the file recovered Outlook.pst-file with a size of 150 MB.

So: I think my backup is corrupt. Are there any tools to repair this backup?
Thank you for your ideas,
Sven

Sven,

There is no way to repair a backup file.
Did you try to mount the image: with ATI 2011 installed, right click on the archive and choose "archives -> mount".

Hi.
I did not know this feature. I just tried it, I mounted my Backup as volume F: (successful). But: when I clicked on it for browsing, he says: volume is not formatted, he wants me to format this drive. So, no way...

I think, I will have to accept: me too, who always tells friends "backup, backup, backup", I have now lost some mails :-) And just these few mails of last week were important :-(

Okay, thank you very much for your help, I think, I will call Acronis-Support on Monday, maybe, they still have insider tipps, though I don't really believe that.
Ciao, Sven

Sven,
Try to mount the image in read write mode if read only didn't work or vice versa.

Hi,

You can use Outlook recovery tools to repair your PST file. Below is a list of them:

Most of them provide a free demo so you can try first.

Hi
Unfortunately I can not e-mail Acronis directly and wondering if some one elese can help. I had upgraded my Acronis backup software from 9 -12. When I log on to my account the only backup product regestered shows backup 9. My last full back up was with Acronis 12. I can log on to Acronis 11. Last week my computer crashed and I lost all my data. I saved my full backup with Acronis upgrade 12 and saved the download link in outlook 2007 with the serial no. Now I can not recover my out look folder. I wonder if some one had the same issue as me and can help.

Thanks
Aslam
