Restore Question from a neophyte!

Thread needs solution

When I choose "My Data" as the backup method, I don't see anywhere to choose anything?

Next question;

What exactly is a System Volume backup, and how does it differ from a full disk image?

Per the user manual:

5.3.2 Selecting the target archive location
Select the destination location for the backup and specify the archive name.
If you are going to create a new archive (i.e. perform a full backup), select Create new
backup archive and enter the path to the archive location and new archive file name in the
Backup Location: field below or click Browse, select the archive location on the directory
tree and enter the new file name in the File name line, or use the file name generator (a
button to the right of the line).
When you have chosen the My Data backup type for backing up files and/or folders, you
can select the zip archive type. For more information see 3.8 Support for Zip format.

You should see the ZIP option when you click on browse to select the destination of the archive.

I do see the .zip option now.

How about this;

What exactly is a System Volume backup, and how does it differ from a full disk image?

I am not sure about what they mean by System Volume versus disk image. If you do a full disk image of the disk containing the system, you are most likely encompassing the system volume backup.

It looks like a system volume backup is an image, but it's smaller than a complete backup?

Can a single program only be restored in the event of a crash, such as QuickBooks for instance?

You cannot restore a single program. Programs and Windows have to be restored at the same time: "system volume". A disk can have more than the system partition. Maybe volume means partition here. Not sure.

Hello again

I managed to successfully create Acronis and Bart PE recovery CD's for both the Home PC and the laptop.
They all work, and I can see the drives when I boot up, so life is good there.

The laptop does allow the USB as a boot option, but the "operating system is missing" error message keeps coming up no matter what I do
when trying to boot from the flash drive.

I've reformatted it, and created it several times in the ATI software, but no dice.
It would be nice to have this option if the CD drive in the laptop takes a dump.

Can I boot from a USB CD drive?

Take care
Bob

USB CD Drive? You mean a CD reader connected through USB? I don't know.

Did you produce the USB flash drive from the ATI wizard, and selected the flash drive as the destination?

An alternative to create a bootable USB flash drive is here: http://themudcrab.com/acronis_usbharddrive.php

Perhaps this link may assist.
Note the item marked as 1. If you encounter.....

Edited:
If you are considering using any USB bootable device, the Grub4Dos method is a nice alternative which is part of MudCrab's website as mentioned by Pat L in post 58 above.

http://themudcrab.com/acronis_grub4dos.php

The Grub4Dos boot method can be added to a Flashdrive, or a USB hard drive or a 2nd internal disk. One of the many nice features is that you can copy iso files (bootable media cd boot files) from several versions of TrueImage and select from a boot menu of choices as to which version of TrueImage Home you wish to boot into. Section 1 and 3 from the preceding link explains how.

This method makes for an easy alternative. I personally have Grub4Dos installed on a 2nd internal disk (desktop) plus a flash drive plus a usb disk in an enclosure. The install files from Grub4Dos can co-exist in the partition with all the other files. To use, you open the Bios and select the appropriate boot device you want to boot from.

Pat;
Yes I did create the Flash through the wizard.
All of the files show up on the drive, just can't boot from it.

I'm going to digest the links and will surely have more questions later.

You guys are the best!

Thanks
Bob

Just tried the first link;

"Creating Acronis Bootable Media on a USB Flash Drive (applies to Windows Vista/7/2008/2008 R2)"

It lists all the drives EXCEPT the Flash drive for some reason.
I moved the drive to another USB slot and the same thing.
The drive is visible from Windows Explorer, but not 'list disk"

The intro does say that this is for Windows Vista/7/2008/2008 R2 and I am running XP Media Edition .

Any thoughts on that?

Bob

OK

I just tried method #2 where you restore an image to the Flash drive and then run the Media Builder.

I can restore the image to the Flash, but the machine can't see the drive in Windows Explorer or Media Builder.

Starting to think it's the Flash drive, but it works normally in all other aspects.

Thoughts...
