Restoring an image from a 256GB SSD to a smaller SSD

Thread needs solution

If I recall correctly, with older versions of ATI Home, I could restore images to drives of various sizes. My current machine has a 256 GB SSD as the OS drive, I tried to restore an image of this drive to a smaller SSD, but couldn't. Is this no longer doable with ATI 2015?

Once I got used to 2015 I liked it, but not being able to complete the above is making me regret buying it.

Thinking the Universal Restore Tool might solve it, I tried to install that - several downloads and several install attempts proved I still have a well rounded 4 letter word collection :-)

OS - Windows 8.1 with update 1 - 64 bit.

ETA - installed ATI 2012 on E:\ drive, Windows 10 Tech Preview build 9901, and was able to put the 256 GB drive image on a 120 GB drive w/o issue. I like simple operations without issues :-).

Did you try to restore from the recovery CD?

Have a bootable USB, which restored the bigger drive image to the smaller drive w/o issues. Thanks for the suggestion.
Is backing up and/or restoring using a bootable device the preferred method?
Again, my thanks.

Restoring should not require a bootable device per the product design, but it is highly recommended to do ANY image restore or cloning from the recovery medium, and to NOT use the Acronis startup recovery manager...

Restoring files, or doing backups from Windows is perfectly fine.
