Restoring RAID0 Backup Image to RAID1 Mirror
I would like to convert a machine which currently has Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit installed on a RAID0 striped array consisting of two 320GB hard disk drives to a RAID1 mirrored array consisting of two 1TB hard disk drives. The original purpose of the system required speed, whereas now it needs to be reliable (i.e. redundant storage) and speed is not a major concern. The system is using the built-in Intel raid controller in the ICH9R chipset family.
I was able to use Acronis True Image Home 2011 to make a complete backup archive of the original installation to my external hard disk drive. I then swapped the internal hard drives, configured the mirrored array, and restored the backup image to the newly created volume. The system POSTs, but then sits at a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left-hand corner. I ran the Windows Vista startup repair tool from the original operating system disk, it detected the Windows installation, but found no errors to correct.
I would like to keep the existing installation from the striped array intact, if possible, as there is a library of software which has been built over several years installed on it and I am not sure I can find all of the re-installation media/license information for the multitude of programs which are installed.
Has this happened to anyone else that has attempted this type of conversion? It may be possible for me to attempt to clone the striped array directly to the mirrored array, assuming that I can have both configured simultaneously in the system (there is a distinct lack of SATA ports on this particular motherboard). Would this method work better or will I simply arrive in the same predicament?
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.
