Restoring a Windows7 image on top of an XP image.

Thread needs solution

Hello All,

I'm experiencing an issue that i'm sure has been discussed here before but i cannot seem to find.

1. I created both a Windows 7 image and an XP image.
2. The current active image is Windows XP.
3. I'm trying to restore a Windows7 image.

When in the backup options, the Windows7 image has the core NTFS partition and a 'System Reserved' partition. Problem is, it doesn't match what is current on the drive with the XP image.

What's the fastest and simplest way to get around this? We have lots of Win7 and XP images, and if there is no simple solution for this.... i'm in a heap of trouble.

Please advise.

TIA!

I should add, what is current on the XP image is just one large partition, not a large and small reserved partition. Thx.

I should lastly add, there are no drive naming issues. I can simply only select one partition to install,

Either:

1. System Reserved or
2. NTFS C:

Once i select either, i cannot select another. So i'm stuck with either the System Reserved without an OS or an OS with no bootable partition.

Hope that helps.

Were the two OS's originally on the same drive?

I have two physical disks. I backup all my images on the second disk. And i restore only to the first disk.

Disk 1 = C: drive.
Disk 2 = D: drive.

But yes, both images originally started out as C: main partitions..

Can you first delete all partitions on the target drive (the one you are restoring onto)?

Well yeah, i could probably do that, but it's going to come back. This isn't the first time i've seen this.

What is the proper way to wipe the target drive from within acronis?

Well yeah, i could probably do that, but it's going to come back.

The deleted partition resurrects?
Anyway, if you use B&R 10, there is DD lite, that allows you to delete partition explicitly. In TrueImage Home 2011 there is 'add new disk' that first deletes all partitions on the disk and then offers you to create new (not necessary, you can create them as the part of restore process)

Ok i'll try that out. So i just assign it to unallocated space after deleting?

I have B&R 9 i believe, not TI.
