Scheduled backups not happening

Thread needs solution

I have three backups: mybackup email and mypartitions that are scheduled to backup to an external drive. The email file is supposed to backup weekly and the mypartitions daily at 2 am and then turn off the computer. I also have a cloud backup that is supposed to run at midnight daily. None of these is working properly. The computer is still on in the morning and the backups haven't happened. I've tried changing the setting but it still doesn't work. This is critical data and I am very frustrated. Attached are some screen shots of the setups and log

Elizabeth,

What type of computer and OS are your using?

Comments on your attachments:

Regarding the log picture, if you open the "Failed to start Backup Email", does it give a reason for failure? Was drive E attached and recognized at the time. How is Drive E connected?

Cloud backup--I do not use. cannot help.

I would discourge your use of these settings within your backup scheme. It permits too many incrementals before a new full and too many inc's leads often to the problem of a backup not being restorable. You are already up to 28 backups kept.

I would suggest you use the "automatic cleanup" on this option and choose the specific option "store no more x recent version chains". X could be your choise based on how much storage space you can allot to this backup. Look at signature link 2 below and review illustration 11-Inc and do read all the text associated with 11-Inc. I would suggest you stop using this task and create a new task with my suggested backup scheme. Point new task to a new storage folder or sub-folder. Also consider changing your backup type from "partitions" to a full disk image. Same lnk 1 except refer the very first picture illustration where you click the "switch to disk mode" option.

email_backup_scheme:
Your backups sheme calls for each chain to contain 5 backups so the deletion will begin counting when backup #5 (4th inc) is older than 7 days.

Have you checked in the scheduler and then the advance settings to make sure the options are checked to wake the computer and keep it from sleeping. Examine all the settings on this advanced settings tab. When the backup was missed, was drive E attached? A setting based on older than 7 days involves consolidtion of backups. I avoid consolidation as I believe there to be great risk in the merging of backup data. I prefer the automatic cleanup method where you based your retention on "store no more than x recent version chains". Using that option, the computer wil simply delete the oldest backup and there is no consolidation delays or risk.

I am using Windows 7 on a PC. My external backup disk E: is always on and connected. I am using version 2014 and can't follow the directions on How Create/Manage Backup Tasks shown above. There is no option for disk mode. How do I do it in the 2014 version?

If I create a new backup scheme to backup the whole disk and operating system what is the most efficient scheme? The external hardrive is 500 MB as is my local drive. Do I delete the current backup instructions under disk and partition backup or just turn off the scheduling?

Elizabeth,

When you backup, the resulting TIB file will be somewhat smaller than your original data. It all depends on how many files in a compressed format you already have. On a fresh Windows installation that might be around 50GB, you would get a 25GB image. But if you backup a lot of movies, videos, pictures, exe, etc., you ratio will drop.
To estimate your needed backup size, you can do the following. Run a full backup, then look at the resulting backup size. Multiply this size by three and you get what I recommend you use as a *minimum* destination drive size.
The reasoning is as follows:
- disk and partition backup in an incremental scheme, auto cleanup, keep the most 1 recent backup chain
- first full backup
- a small series of incremental backup
- a new full backup
- then ATI is set to keep only one backup chain, so the previous full and incremtnal will be deleted.

Should I just use the default settings for doing my backups and add turn off the computer on completion. I turned on the options to wake the computer and keep it from sleeping as well as run only when idle (if I am working late).

I set everything back to the default settings last night and added only the setting recommended on the schedule section. This morning I find that no backups were completed last night. Attached are the screen shots from this morning. The log looks like it was successful but when I go to drive E there is no incremental backup from last night. The only way this program works is if I tell it to back up manually which then interferes with my ability to get work done. The program was highly rated and basically is worthless to me if I can't get it to back up overnight.

One problem is the scheduler advanced settings. Uncheck the option "run only when idle" on each task.

The next step would be to examine the power settings to make sure the Windows setting is allowing the computer to wake up.

Signatue link3, item 9 inside that link provides some info about the power settings which need to be adjusted. Options within the power setting may need changing to allow the computer to be awakened.

And a last resort would be to change the backup tasks to "non-scheduled" and use the Windows Task Scheduler to wake and run the tasks.
Signatre link 1, inside that link, index item 3A illustrates how to use the Windows Task Scheduler to run TrueImage Backups.

I unchecked the "run only when idle" and the backup started. I will see tonight if it works when scheduled.

Thanks for the help.

The "disk mode " option is the "swithch to disk mode" option located at the top of the task screen where you select the partitons which are to be included within the backup. The "switch to disk mode" changes the selection to the entire disk which automatically includes all partitons on the system disk.

If could be helpful to reveiw signature link 2 again. Once inside the guide, click on the green colored text so you can see illustrations of each screen as you work through the creation of a backup task.
