"the selected file is not an Acronis True Image archive"

Thread needs solution

I'm having difficulty restoring my machine.  Here are the steps:

 - Successfully installed new, blank hard drive

 - Successfully booted machine using Acronis CD - full version

 - Successfully launched "Restore data wizard"

 - Successfully attached external drive via USB

 - At "Archive Selection" I select the file with the tib extension

 - Dialog tells me "The selected file is not an Acronis True Image archive"

I'm dead in the water!  What can I do?  I relied on this software!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

Fred

Sounds like the tib file was created with either a newer or much older version of TI than the one on your cd. What version of TI are you using?

Hello Fred,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

Have you validated the image? If it is not corrupted then Sparkymachine is right you should use Acronis bootable disc of the same version better the same build number to restore the image successfully.

Hi Dmitry,

Is there any chances to identify which product / version / build used for creating the tib file? Does Acronis saves these informations into the tib file (First 24 bytes or last 12 bytes of file eg.) ?

Hello Mustafa,

Unfortunately there is no way you can check this information from the .tib created.

Have you validated the image? If you have a corrupt backup and need to restore data from it, the general strategy would be to:

  1. Copy the corrupt backup archive to the internal hard disk drive (if the backup is on an external resource/media);
  2. Mount or explore the backup archive and try to restore files or folders from it.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Thank you.

Hi Dmitry,

Thanks to reply. I copied the corrupt backup archive to the internal hard disk drive and try to mount / explore it. Unfortunately operation couldn't be performed successfully.

Please let me make a quote from http://forum.acronis.com/forum/5675#comment-13454

I have similar problem. I created the backup image saving the tib file to a network share. I used Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server Rescue Media Boot CD (v8.206) for creating the tib file. True Image was reported that the operation was finished successfully. The file size was 132.021.907.456 bytes. There wasn't any other files related to this tib file.

When I want to mount this image to my new pc through The Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server (v 8.206) , I take the message "This is not the last created volume of the backup archive. Please insert the last created volume to start working with this archive". When I press the "Next" button, I take the message "The selected file is not an Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server archive or the file is corrupted. Please, select another file"

I've been reproducing this case by using the latest versions of all products (True Image Echo Enterprise Server, True Image Enterprise Server, True Image Home 2010, True Image WorkStation eg.)

Do I have a chance to extract the image file with 3rd party solutions? Does Acronis provide repairing tool for corrupt files?

What is the solution?

Can I ditto this,

"Do I have a chance to extract the image file with 3rd party solutions? Does Acronis provide repairing tool for corrupt files?"

What is the solution? Is there a company/individual who can?

i had similar problem.
tib was not recognize as a legit file. i hope i can find out if i am able to find the cure. not one of my backups worked.

will try the solution later.

I spent a couple of weeks trying to recover my files, unfortunately product support is non-existent for this issue, pretty pathetic really.

Lesson learnt - never use Acronis for data backup.

Good luck - if you have any success let me know!

sorry i have not responded sooner. i think i found the problem. i am not sure which is which,
but i either used the wrong version boot disk or

i used the wrong version while backing it up.

what i learned was make sure when i upgrade (esp when i have different versions) to harmonize them all.

for example:

i have build #1111 in the computer, but i used a recent upgrade build #2222 to recover but the book disk was version #3333 etc. this is just an exaggerated example. but you get the gist

Well done Stephen.
What you learned could be a lesson to all and you said it better than I could.

I use Winzip Pro for a lot of backup tasks (a lot less than I used to). Fairly recently they introduced extra options for zipping up jpegs in particular and have had other options available for a while. I not only pay to keep up with their software but make sure that anything I might need to be able to access is either converted by me or can be read by later versions. I would never ever complain to them that their product can no longer read something I created a million years ago!

Perhaps some people would like Acronis and others to develop products by using our brainwaves and then we could complain about the fact that they never included something we thought about twenty years ago (in twenty years time of course ha ha). Or may be some people want a brain plug in so that their lives can be managed remotely - shame if the link is lost or the server goes down!

Seriously though, if I invest in some software in year A, I don't necessarily expect it to work in year B, whenever that may be. It might be prudent to mention that magnetic media does NOT last very long, only a few years are really guaranteed, and therefore a backup you burned to CD or DVD in 2007 may not be valid anymore, no matter what you use to get at it.

After the creation of .tib file I've changed one of his attributes and made it "hidden", as appear later on if the .tib file is hidden it could not be restored or even mounted, which is strange behavior in my opinion. The same error appears once I've changed the name of the file, so probably, best solution is not to touch in any way the files created by True Image. After revert the attribute, or name all is gone OK with the restoration.
