"selected file is not an Acronis True Image Home archive..." UPDATE - Restored and Done

Thread needs solution

yes it is.

However, when I try to restore from boot cd it shows this message. So what precise version/update do I use to restore? or how do I find that out?

The backup was good before since I was able to browse it from a windows boot.

I will post my own reply to myself :) This is absolutely bizarre, but, it is ridiculous that there is not a header record in the *.tib files that is standardized across version such that the appropriate build release is identified when read by any version of the program. This would allow precisely loading the version of software with the correct updates that can actually read the *.tib file.

After searching on my error message, it became apparent that version software MUST match version of *.tib files that have been created. Re-downloading from the online account will not get you back to the correct version, must ALWAYS recreate a boot disk with the exact version of the software that is creating the *.tib file. With my situation, I had a virus which allowed me to run Acronis on the computer where the virus occurred to create a boot disk that matched the tib file so I am now restoring just fine (process of recovering anyway).

As complicated as all this is, a simple standardized metatag in the header with an informational pop up to insure synchronicity between versions of software and *.tib files is absolutely trivial. It is too much to ask for future versions of backup software to always restore any back level versions of *.tib files, but it is NOT too much to ask to have an informational popup to identify software version to recover *.tib file. Nor is it too much to ask to have a siren go off on the computer with red flashing lights every time Acronis is installed or a new update applied that practically forces the user to recreate a boot disk.

I love the software, but this was rather irritating since the panic engendered by this functional gap has an outsized impact on the user experience when it can't take more than a few days to design develop and roll into next QA cycle.

Update: Restore worked fine, everything is now golden.

Hello Jesse,

Thank you for posting about this issue. I will do my best to assist you.

I really appreciate your detailed feedback and I am happy that the initial issue was resolved.

Most of the time, our software is backward compatible. For example, Acronis True Image Home 2010 will restore backups created with Acronis True Image 2009 Home. Occasionally, there may be a problem if a backup created with Acronis True Image 2010 Home build 7046 will not be restored with an older build of Acronis True Image 2010 Home, for example build 6053.

However, I do understand what you mean and I believe that this will be a useful feature. I will create a Customer Listening ticket for your request and forward it to our Development team.

If you need additional help, or have any other questions, please let me know.

Thank you.
