Separating Data Files from System Backup

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have a very large database of photographs. Somewhere around 500 GB. If I choose to do a backup of my entire drive, it takes quite a long time and I am assuming that it would take a very long time to recover from a system failure because the entire content of the backup would have to be retrieved. Not just the system critical files. In a case like this, are you better off foregoing the backup of the entire disk and instead separating out your system settings from your data and file folder backups?

Thanks.

John

I keep all my data files such as photographs in a separate partition. I do not mix important data with the OS/apps partition.

Nice to be able to:
Do faster images of C
Not have to worry about data files having a current update if I want to blow away C for any reason.

I do both.

I image my computer daily on a NAS. I backup my important files on an FTP site that is not hosted in my house. So if we get a break in, house burns down, etc, my important files are still safe.

Many photographers would have a second disk and have a second copy on the extra hard drive not attached to computer.

Some other opinions can be found in my signature index on item #12

I saw a TV program a couple of years ago where professional photographers were asked how they archived their photos. Copying them to HDs and storing the HD was by far the most common method (of the limited sample).
