Serious issues with True Image 2011

Thread needs solution

I have been using Acronis True Image home through at least four versions. I recently accepted an offer to upgrade from TI 2010 with plus pack to TI 2011 with Plus Pack. I installed the new version on my Windows 7 x64 computer, using a clean install because of some problems I saw on the Forum with installing over the old version. It seemed to install OK (except it had to download a new build 5519 even though I had just been given the install files). With any prior backup records now gone because of the clean install, I browsed to my previous backup and loaded it. The TI screen now showed this backup, but it had the times of the incremental backups included all wrong. In fact, I could not even see more than one increment until I loaded each incremental file separately. What I got was totally confusing -- just some icons in a timeline. I could not see what files it was referring to, however, because I could not get the new UI to show the full file name (hovering over the icon showed only part of the name).

I ran a full image backup with the new TI 2011 (on Dec 4), and was told it completed correctly. OK. When I tried to run another image backup a week later, I noticed that the backup file I had made on Dec 4 was 10GB less than the earlier one I had installed. Not a good sign because my computer still has all the same material on its disk (about 80 GB). Before I could do the second backup, I was asked to upgrade to build 6597. I downloaded and installed this build, and rebooted as requested. When I started TI after the reboot, it soon requested to upgrade Plus Pack to build 6597. I downloaded and installed the PP upgrade. However, this time the screen saying "install complete" came up almost immediately after I had selected the install now button. Another bad sign. When I tried to start TI, I got the little Windows wait icon for about 30 seconds, but it went away and left me with a blank screen. There were no applications showing in Task Manager, and no processes I could recognize as Acronis.

Now worried that the upgrade had failed somehow, I downloaded build 6597 from the website; When I tried to uninstall first plus pack, I was told that the program was running. I had to reboot again to finally be able to uninstall PP and TI. By this time, I had lost all confidence in 2011. (The notes for build 6597 show many known errors with things as simple as saving to a network store.) After the uninstall, I reinstalled TI 2010 with PP. I was able this time to install my last full backup with 2010, and it recognized all the incremental backups contained properly after I pointed to the last one in the series. Sure enough, when I tried to load the Dec 4 backup I made with 2011, the operation failed, saying the file was corrupted. Of course, by now I was expecting such since it was much too small anyway.

Bottom line, I am sticking with TI 2010. It seems that there are serious problems with 2011: new builds less than a week apart; installation failures; and, most concerning, running a backup with no errors even though the backup is corrupt -- at least with PP even when not using any PP features. I have already lost too many hours messing with it. I will stay with 2010 until Acronis gets 2011 working in a stable fashion. I just want others to know to look out. By the way, I did file a formal service request with Acronis with this same information so they can see what they are facing. This is very disappointing.
