Size of backup files
I'm using Acronis True Image 9.0 to back up a drive with 58 GB of data. The weekly incremental backup files are 9 GB or more even when there is little or no change in the data. Should they be that big?

I've had no problems with restoring. The program works well. Just takes up a lot of space, perhaps as if it were copying the whole file and folder structure with every incremental backup. I'm talking about a weekly backup after a few Google searches, a bit of word processing and some web e-mail via Gmail, no defragging or major downloads. I'm using XP and a 160 GB backup drive (which gets filled up in about 10 weeks). Many thanks for your advice. Any further thoughts would be welcomed.

Have you checked to see what (if any) Windows System Restore Checkpoint may be included. If you are keeping active checkpoints, consider stopping and restarting. This will clear out the old restore points. If you do regular TI backups, you do not need the checkpoints.

System restore was set to max space allotment, and thus presumably max recovery points. I've disabled the whole thing. Will be interesting to see how it affects the size of the backup files. Again, thanks for your help.

BRILLIANT! Many thanks.
System restore evidently was the problem. After I disabled it, the incremental backup size shrank to 1 GB. (I'm going to try a minimal level of system restore points and see how that works.)
It pays to ask the experts.
Gratefully,
