Specifed File does not exist error

Thread needs solution

When backup up my C: drive to my Western DIgital 500 gb external USB drive it starts to back up
and after just a little while I get this:"The specified file does not exist click browse to specify another location.

At this same time I get a Windows XP error: Windows-Delay write failed
It mentions different things at different times such as E:My Backup or E:\system volume information or
E:\$MFT

I see this exact same thing described several months ago and the cure was to get the latest download.'
I have downloaded the latest build and it makes no difference, same errors. I have been backing up
with this USB drive previously, a couple of months ago but have been alternating USB drives for off
site storage. I got this USB drive yesterday from my safe deposit drive and not it won't work.

Do I have an Acronis problem or do I have a drive problem or both? I do know if I unplug the drive the Windows-delayed write error goes away. I am looking for ideas on how to resolve this?

Thanks Ed

Ed,

When the drive is in, launch the device manager, right click on the disk under the disk drives section, choose the policies tab: make sure it is optimized for quick removal. http://kb.acronis.com/content/4071

Then, right click on the Computer icon on your desktop, choose manage, open storage, disk management. Right click on your USB disk and choose change drive letters. Choose a fixed drive letter (for example V:). Reboot the computer. Launch ATI and verify that the destination is V:\My Backups or whatever folder you chose.

If you alternate USB disks, I recommend you use 2 different tasks with different names, give the 2 disks 2 different drive letters.

Then, open the Computer with Windows explorer, right click on the disk and choose properties and in the Tools tab, select check disk for errors. Check both boxes to fix errors and scan for bad sectors. This check will take a long time on your 500GB disk. So let it run overnight.
You will see any errors in the Event Viewer.

Delayed write for $Mft. Check USB cable, USB controller, whatever. Bring additional USB power supply if the disk if powered from the host only. I had such errors when USB drive just suddenly disconnects for no apparent reason, just copying files ono it, and you have to reconnect it back to see it again. Only on one of the computers, on the other it was ok. PS - run chkdsk on it - it probably has tons of errors or missing files.
