Standalone Online Backup is not ready for Primetime

Thread needs solution

I have used many Acronis products for over seven years.

I just signed up for the special deal for Acronis Online Backup (250 G). For $30 for five PCs, I figured I'd give it a shot. (I am also using IDrive, which I am happy with.)

Running Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate.

I am waiting until I hear enough good things before I upgrade to True Image 2010 (currently have TI11, which does not run on my new computer.)

So, I am running the Standalone version of Online Backup, to try it out.

I designated a small number of items to backup (80 Meg)

The first time I ran it - SLOW SLOW SLOW.

I am now running the backup a second time. It has been Preparing for online backup and "calculating.." for the last 20 minutes. I think it is time to "End Task."

I am in the same exact boat using W7 Pro 32 bit

When I quit, and reboot the pc to try it again, I will see from time to time, my transfer speed, but whenever I see that, and come back a couple hours later... The upload is interrupted, and there seems to be no log on what was or what isnt uploaded.

My screenshot above does show almost a gig of data uploaded, but this service is causing me grief. Luckily this data is a duped using SyncToy from my WHS.

Hello Ray and Matthew!

Thank you for finding time to open the thread regarding this question. I completely share your concern and will be glad to provide you with some information regarding this question.

Unfortunately you are correct - the initial backup may be slower than expected. This happens due to Online services depend on the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and not on any particular software, so as a solution we advise to backup at the first time just critical data - on the second attempt the backups should speed up significantly. Please kindly check this article for more details.

I'm also glad to inform you that our development team is in process of upgrading the software on the servers for better performance, so we expect it to be done in several weeks, starting from the next one.

I completely understand how inconvenient it may be and would like to assure you that your comments and feedback will be forwarded to the Development and Product Management team for them to take an action on it.

I would appreciate if you could kindly share with us your further questions and concerns - we will be glad to help you!

Thank you.

Guys,
This sounds a lot like the problem being experienced by a lot of people for the last two weeks over at #7902. Still unresolved - with promises by Acronis to resolve.

Hi all...
I just started playing with AOB a couple days ago... and it's super slow. I get the disconnects also. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Their other products are very good, so we'll see where this goes I guess.

There are many problems with this program, the upload speed and disconnects being only two of them. I've wasted a month nursing it along and waiting for promised fixes; and now Yana cheerfully tells us to "expect it to be done in several weeks, starting from the next one", which sounds like a politician's way of saying "maybe next month". What a joke.

Still waiting for my refund on Acronis Online Backup. I'll wait until next Monday, at which time I'll dispute the credit card charge, and my money will be immediately refunded to me.

I wasted fifteen days diddling with Acronis Online Backup before I signed on with Norton Online Backup, which has run flawlessly from the second I started using it.

Hello all!

Guys, I completely share your concern, and be sure we in support are doing our best to get it resolved, but still it depends on our Development team - and they are working on it as well. No joking and politician promises - just the information we were provided with. According to the Experts and Development team, software update process on the servers should be ready by the end of this week, so we expect significant raise of performance. Please keep in mind that it depends on the Internet Service Provider (ISP) as well, so most of the users should expect to back up 2-5 GB/day for the initial backup, Some users will have higher performance if they have higher bandwidth connections; others will be slower. Currently we would suggest you to

  1. Choose only your most critical files for the initial backup. When that is complete, then add more files and folders for the 2nd backup. And use this approach until all of your data is protected online.
  2. Set your CPU allocation to “high” in the options tab to improve system performance of the backup service. After the initial backup is completed, Acronis recommends moving the setting back to “low” so it does not impact the performance of your other applications.

"Not-initial" backups should speed up as well. Be sure that if some of you still suffers from this issue next week, we will gather the diagnostic information and find a fix.

Meanwhile yesterday we released an update for those who uses Standalone Acronis Online Backup tool, you can find it here in your account.

Feel free to reinstall it onto your system and check whether the performance got improved.

Unfortunately it cannot be installed on the same machine running Acronis True Image Home 2010, but we are working on the update for it as well.

So currently all we can do is to wait till the end of the week to have this issue fixed.

Dear Steven, I have checked your refund case and can see that it is already in process and we are just waiting for commitment from CleverBridge, so I would appreciate if you could let me know how the process is going. Should there be any additional issues - let me know, I will forward your request to the Sales Experts' team and they will definitely assist you with the problem.

Do not hesitate to share your concerns with us, we will be glad to help!

Thank you!

I am having the same problem on a Windows 7 machine. IT seems to be working on an XP machine, though.

In general, though the user interface is okay, it lags far behind Carbonite's user interface in terms of friendliness to complete newcomers. Acronis needs to work on their front-end.

(While I'm on my soapbox, I find the plethora of product offerings from Acronis to be overwhelming -- too many products with too many names, which just leads to customer confusion.)

It's clear that Acronis needs to spend serious programmer effor on cleaning up the Online product front-end. I haven't even looked at their backend.

All in all, I agree: it's not ready for prime time.

Hi Yana,

I'm running Windows7 64 bit version. I recently purchased the AOB software to backup my files. I read all of the comments, but I still have to agree with UPSET group of users that are having SLOW backups. Im trying to backup 100 GB and it says it will take another 6 days and 18 hours after running for 3 days without any stop. My ISP speed at 830 kb/sec, which means I would backup ~1GB every hour, which means that I would only have to wait for 4 days to backup 100GB, which is still a long time, not 9 days estimated by AOB backup software!

I am not sure if I have chosen the right software for my backup solution!

Please comment.

Many of the online backup services offer to take a disk from you by mail for the initial bulk load. Some loan you a disk.
Consumer Internet service, with the upstream usually less than 1 megabit/sec, is just too slow to bulk upload 10's of GB or more in reasonable time.

That's a complaint with all such services.
