TI 2011 restore partition to smaller disk
I have a system partition that is roughly 139GB (150GB base 10) that I wish to restore onto an SSD of 119GB (128GB base 10). That used space in the original partition is 115GB, but I am not able to restore because TI cannot seem to find a way to fit that.
In the boot media loader, there is an interface to restore the partition to a smaller size, by adjusting the destination partition size. But it keeps reporting "there may not be enough free space on the system partition to boot up you operating system after recovery".
In Windows, there is no such option and it simply refuses to proceed.
Is there a way to get this to work?

yes i did uninstall apps to bring it to 115GB. But do you think TI is considering 4GB to be not enough for a restore? What is the threshold?

I am not sure of the treshold.
First thing to do is to run chkdsk /r on the disk before backup to repair any filesystem error that might throw ATI off.
Second, did you try with the recovery CD? You mention the boot media loader, but I don't know if you mean F11 or the recovery CD...
If you see the same thing with the recovery CD, are you sure you are selecting the right partition? Some time users get confused by the drive letters displayed by the boot CD and try to restore the C:\system on the system reserved partition, for example. Look at the partition label.
Otherwise, the only thing to do is to reduce the data...

There is nothing wrong with the source partition because it can be restored to other disks. After giving it a second consideration, I went ahead to buy a bigger SSD because even if I could squeeze out enough to make TI accept a restore to a smaller partition, it more of less meant I was stuck with that constraint "for life"; making it difficult to install newer programs in future. Since I am not ready to perform a clean OS reinstall yet, I have to go with the extra monetary cost and equipment. The smaller SSD will be repurposed for my gaming PC. Thanks.
