Transfer files to a laptop
I just got a new [my first] laptop. I want to move everything from my desktop to my laptop.
Can I do that using a disk image backup, and then restore it to the laptop using the "different hardware" choice in the restore? Not only is the hardware different, but the disk sizes are different as well.
Will my registrations transfer over -- MS Office, Windows 7, etc., or will I have to re-register these?

I have the Plus-Pack, my TI is v2011, and both machines are Windows 7 Ultimate. The drives are different sizes, and the hardware and drivers are, obviously, all different.
I expect to have some "adjusting" to do in each program for video colors etc. It's the registrations and, if possible, the [other] settings for each of the programs that I would like to have transfer, along with installation settings etc.

Yes, with the Plus Pack you can transfer your programs and files all in one. Make a Disk and Partition Backup of the old machine. See Grover's Index http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3426 section 7-B for help with the Plus Pack.

If your OS on desktops is a retail one, not OEM (came with computer), you'll be able to reactivate it on the laptop (and it will be deactivated on the desktop). Another story is 'fn key driver' you'll probably need.

Yes, the o/s - Windows 7 - is retail, not OEM.
Fn key driver?

OS installed on laptop contains auxiliary programs that support laptop-specific hardware and invoked by fn key+something. It may be difficult to obtain them if laptop manufacturer didn't think about it.

But if I back up all my drivers for the laptop prior to the "restore" from my desktop, shouldn't I then be OK? Or should I just bite the bullet and install everything from "scratch."
-- Although, I could back up the laptop, then try the restore from the desktop, and if it bombs, restore the original laptop set...

If you change hardware and you can (even if you don't like :-) reinstalling Windows and your apps, do this. Universal restore is complicated and fickle...

Somehow I was afraid you would say that. If that is the case, what is the point of the Plus Pack? Theory is all well and good, but is one cannot depend on it...
What do I have to do to set up backups and start them from a batch file?
