Transferring data to new harddrive

Thread needs solution

I hope someone can help me with this.

I need to transfer data from an old IDE harddrive to a new one. The old one is too small to add more data.

I have true image but not sure how to go about transferring the data.

If someone could explain how to accomplish this step by step I would be more than grateful.

Thanks,

Adam

Well, you could just copy the data files. Or you could make a My Computer full backup of the source disk and restore it to the the target disk using manual and resize settings -- check the user guide and Grover's aides in the stickies. Depending on which version you are using, the user guide directly addresses restoring to a larger disk. Seek and you shall find ;)

Admittedly Acronis has never figured out how to make it really easy to find the user guides -- if you click on User Guides under the Self Serivice section of the Support page, they take you to the docs for the Small business products -- Why on Earth Acronis would want to screw up just making tye user guide available is anyone's guess -- maybe it's jsut Acronis's way to affirm, "Screw the retail customer; we're focused on business and corp customers now." ;)

But if you happen to be on the ATI 13/2010 Home and small business page and select Documentation, you can get this listing of user guides and docs for the current and older versions of ATI home version:

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/docs/

And, you can directly download the ATI 13/2010 user guide here:
http://download.acronis.com/pdf/TrueImage2010_UserGuide.en.pdf

other guides are listed

A quick link to the user guides is just to the left of the forum posts :)

Ha, yes, that was/is a good improvement over the old forums. Sadly, not much help if someone is on say, the home page of the trueimage. I wouldn't even expect someone to be directed to the forums to get a user guide. I'd expect the user guide to direct folks to the forums in case they needed further help. Just one more example, when it comes to the user experience, Acronis just doesn't get it, yet.

Otoh, it's a bit alarming the number of folks that don't even bother to try and read the instructions before asking for instructions.

Thanks for the information. I'm sorry I was not more clear with my question. I'm actually wondering what would be the best way to transfer the data from an old to new harddrive. I guess I will install the new harddrive and make it the master and the old one the slave??? Then write the info from the old to the new drive?

Hello Adam,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

The best way of transferring data from old drive to a new one is to use “Clone Disk” option of Acronis True Image programs. The program allows you to transfer your system partition and installed applications to a higher-capacity hard disk.

You can select the method of partition and data transfer:

- as is;

- new disk space is proportionally distributed between the old disk partitions;

- new disk space is distributed manually.

Yes, it's in the user guide. Just read; would have taken you a lot less time than going through the forum -- maybe two minutes tops.
