True Image 2011, Build 6857, Network Shares Don't Authenticate

Thread needs solution

After upgrading to Build 6857 I can no longer authenticate to network shares from within Acronis. I did a System Restore to before the update and Acronis works normally with the same Network Sahres.

I have 2 WinXP SP3 machines where one of them has a hard drive that is shared and I keep my Acronis backups there. My login is the same on both PCs and I'm a member of the Administrors Group on both PCs. On the PC that is running the Acronis backup I have a drive mapped to the shared drive on the other PC. The drive mapping works in all other situations. I've been doing backups this way with Acronis for years, way back to version 2008.

There's something with Build 6857 that won'y let me authenticate to Netwrok Shares and create a backup there. For now I won't upgrade to this build and Acronis is working fine, or at least it's backing up ok. I can't say it would do a restore because I haven't had to try that.

Thanks for any help you may have.

Philip,

The latest build fixes several networking issues. Try to disconnect the mapped network drives and then try to authenticate with ATI.

So, I reinstalled Build 6857, deleted all my drive mappings to that Network share and was able to create a backup to the Network share. I thought it was fixed, however, after creating the backup if I try to access the Network Share again from within Acronis I get the "connection failed" message in the Authentication Settings dialog that opens up.

If I quit Acronis and reboot the PC I can then go back and access the network share from within Acronis. It appears that I start to get the "connection failed" message after I complete a backup. Just quitting Acronis isn't good enough I have to reboot the PC. When I first open Acronis after rebooting the PC I can access network shares with no problem, it's only after I do a backup where it then no longer can connect to the share.

It's also doing something weird when I try to rerun the same backup from the MyBackups list. It's confirured to create a Version set but instead it creates a whole new backup with same name having (1) appended to it. It usually would append _1 to a new incremental backup.

There's something just not right with this build. I also see other postings of users having similar problems with authenticating to shares.

Actually, after doing some more testing, I have this problem with any build of version 11. I guess I never noticed it before. I uninstalled True Image and then ran the Acronis uninstaller exe, reinstalled version 11 so I'm at Build 5105.

Still looks like the problem is with authenticating to the remote share. Strange because I'm able to access the share from the Desktop and with other software without problems.

attached is a snippet of the Acronis log.

A couple of changes. I have a USB drive connected to my Cisco Linksys E4200 cable router and so decided to try that as the backup file's destination. I don't have any problems authenticating to that share through Acronis. For some strange reason it's just shares connected to other PCs. I've tried both a WinXP and Win7 as destinations and they both start to exhibit "connection failed" error after completing a backup until I reboot the PC that is running True Image.

Also, I guess I got confused earlier regarding the version set backups and the file naming. Version sets create "differential" backups and I was thinking incremental. The incremental files just append a new version number to the end of the file name, however it does skip the number 1. After it creates the first incremental backup I have 2 files named; wdss.tib and wdss2.tib where wdss.tib is the first full backup.

I was just noticing in my Acronis web site account that I've been using True Image since version 8 in 2005. You'd think I'd understand it better..... -phil

Did you try to change the Windows 7 sharing to turn off homegroup and use Windows username and passwords? I am wondering if that would make a difference.

I have the Win7 PC set that way already. My other PCs are still WinXP so I'm not using much of the Homegroup configurations. I'm able to access the shares on the Win7 PC in all other apps and the Win Explorer. It's just from True Image after the backup is completed that you can no longer access Network shares until the PC running True Image is rebooted.

Hello all,

Thank you for posting and thank you for your help Pat,

Philip, let me provide you with additional assistance please.

To get to the bottom of this problem I would recommend to contact our Support team with the following logs:

1. AcronisInfo report.

2. Wireshark logs.

If you need additional help please let me know.

Thank you.

So I looked at the AcronisInfo and a Wireshark trace. I can see a problem but not sure what the resolution is.
In the network trace there is a SMB response from the remote computer;
NT Status: STATUS_REQUEST_NOT_ACCEPTED (0xc00000d0)

In the Acronis log there is a comment;
event id="12" level="4" module="0" code="65520" time="1308238879" message="No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept" line_tag="0xBD28FDBD64EDB8BC"

I looked on the remote computer and see 10 sessions listed for my account. None of the sessions have any open files and when I delete them there's a message saying there was not an account with an open session. It does delete all the entries and then True Image can access the share again until 10 sessions occur again.

Not sure why there are so many sessions opening.

After about 16 minutes of no activity the sessions disappear from the Computer Management Sessions list and True Image can access the shares normally once again.

When backing up to a shared network resource, Authentication has been more than difficult; it has seemed impossible using the latest build of TIH 2011. It works, then it fails - works - fails etc.. BUT, I have it working consistently by using credentials of a User assigned to the Backup Operator User Group. I have no idea why a User assigned to the Administrator Group did not work, and I don't care why (at this point).

I created a new User Name and password and assigned the new user to the Backup Operator group only. The user is not a member of any other group.

When prompted for Authentication Credentials, I use the newly created user name and password. It appears to work consistently. Hope I have not jinxed myself!!!!

just to update my original issue. The XP PC that I was having the problem with has been replaced by a new Win7x64 PC and I no longer see the problem with authenticating to a remote share after completeing a backup.

Hi Philip,

My build is Update-3 6942 on WinXP SP3 and backing up directories of shared drives located on a Win2000 Pro SP4. I too have absolutely no issues of connectivity in any other part of the system or other applications. I have had the exact same behavior. But, connection to the remote computer is lost and recovered ever so often. DHCP leases expiring and renewing might be the cause of that, but doesn't explain the immediate failures after renewed two day lease.

I believe that I have narrow down our issue after spending several hours on chat with an Acronis support person in India. I got to thinking about the network data being an issue. So, I abandoned the chat with support and did a IPCONFIG /release and /renew on both systems. It would temporarily allow the connection and temporarily resolve the authentication failure. Then I realize another common denominator here, Linksys. You have a Cisco Linksys device and I have a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router BEFSR41. I would bet my last dollar, even if I have currently been an unemployment IT professional for over a year, that there is a compatibility issue between Acronis TI Home 2011 and the Linksys Router Switch. Acronis is not liking the data between transmitted from the remote computer. Since, the successful backups are intermittent, the Home 2011 should be able to be fixed. I just don't think they have been able to narrow it down enough to a specif cause.

Well after looking at the very last reply from Philip, it looks like an issue between XP and TIH 2011 or it is between XP, TIH 2011 and the Linksys devices.

Unfortunately, I don't have the option to replace two of my XP computers with Windows 7. Remember, I am unemployed.
