True Image Home 2013 Scheduled Back ups don't run in Windows 8

Thread needs solution

I have two scheduled backups, one a File backup and the other an E-mail backup. Neither runs automatically at all. I can run either back up manually if I click the “Back up Now” button.
These are the same two backup configurations I have used in the past several versions of True Image Home.
I have tried recreating the backup settings without success.
The Windows 8 RTM was obtained via my MSDN subscription. I can only conclude that there are still bugs with True Image Home 2013 running on Windows 8 and True Imager 2013 it is not yet ready for production use.
To add salt to the wound, the Acronis web site does not appear to be compatible with IE 10 and does not render correctly through the ‘Contact Support’ pages. The “Ask Now”, “E-mail now” and “Chat Now” links are obscured because the page does not render correctly., so I can’t even report the bug!

Riddlespoon,

Check that all Acronis services are running in Services.msc, also check what scheduler logs on as.

There are three Acronis services all ‘running’ and each is logged on as ‘Local System Account’
Acronis Nonstop Backup Service
Acronis Scheduler2 Service
Acronis Sync Agent Service

There are no relevant errors in the Acronis True Image logs
There are also no relevant errors in the Windows Event viewer

@Riddlespoon

I have W8 RTM installed on my Lenovo laptop and 2013 runs OK on that, so the question is what is different on your system to mine.

Does your task manager look similar to this?

Is Acronis User a member of Backup Operators and is your logon a member as well?

What are your schedule settings, I'll see if I get the same problem as you.

@Rob,

Could you give more information such as what I was supposed to be doing when it gave you the error message.

Thanks Colin

First, there is no error message - the scheduled backup just don't run.

I have attached screen shots of Task Manager, The True Image UI showing the two backups and the Schedule settings of the file backup. The emails backup is similar.

The Backup Operators group has no members, so maybe this is the problem. I have added my login to the Backup Operators group. I have also set my login as the account under "Run backup as different Windows user", rather than leaving this blank. I have left the other backup blank to compare the difference.

Unfortunately this didn't work

Riddlespoon,

Belay my reply, last night and today 2013 has stopped working properly on my system - it all started when I tried to run a schedule (testing your problem actually) and run Microsoft Update at the same time (not intentionally), everything froze requiring a hard reboot, rebooted finished the upgrade and then TIH would begin a partition image and then freeze at 5% then W8 would become unresponsive. Repaired, uninstalled, reinstalled and now it won't start a manual image just freezes the system.

I think my problem is that I had DD11 Advanced installed which is not W8 compatible, and, although I've now uninstalled it I have a feeling something is still lurking.

I don't think you need to run as a different user, so long as you have a password to logon to your system and you installed 2013 with Admin privileges.

I don't think I have done anything out of the ordinary setting up the PC. Similar build to the previous Windows 7 machine - same hardware and installed applications, and that had no problems with scheduled True Image backups.

Riddlespoon,
I am testing this issue on a Windows 8 RTM Ent. Eval 64 bit system. I set up a differential backup to an external hard disk drive to run every hour creating the backup and validating it. When the system is up and running these backups work fine. When the system "sleeps" the backups do not occur. When I "wake" the computer, the backup immediately kicks in and runs to completetion with no problem. I am researching the "sleep" issue and will post my results if I can make any progress on getting these backups to "wake" the computer to allow them to run on schedule.
My system is still set to the Power Management defaults that Windows 8 has set up during installation. The task in Acronis is set to "wake" the computer to run the task, and to keep the system "awake" during the task.
Is your Windows 8 system set to "sleep" as mine is?

Hi,

I have the same problem.

Running Windows 8 Pro RTM and Acronis True Image 2013, my daily scheduled backup task doesn't start. According to services.msc, all 3 Trueimage services are up and running.

I've been doing some experimenting and I've managed to get my install working again and recognising schedules.

Has anyone on this thread had the Plus Pack installed as well?

Has anyone either had a beta build of 2013 installed?

Has anyone had 2012 with Plus Pack installed in W8 before upgrading to 2013?

I managed to get mine working again by completely uninstalling using Programs and Features, rebooting, and the reinstalling just 2013, I've yet to reinstall the Plus Pack

 Hello all,

Thank you for for your reports.

Riddlespoon and Peter None,

Could you please enable flags (please see this article on how to do it, section Getting a log) and provide us with schedul2.log?

Also, please obtain Acronis system report from the Help section and attach to your next message.

Please note that you shouldn't close the cmd window prior to the time when the issue is reproduced.

James,

Could you please let us know the results of the research of the "sleep" issue?

Thank you.

Thanks Oleg,

I attempted to get a log for the time when the scheduled backup doesn't run. To do this I set the scheduled backup time for the File backup to 9.36pm. There are no entries in schedul2.log after 9.35pm. The entries in schedul2.log are probably from me doing a 'get list' at this time. I have attached a screen shot of the 'get list' output as well in case it helps.

P.S. I also have the Plus Pack installed

 Hello Riddlespoon,

Thank you for your response.

I assume I wasn't accurate while describing the actions.

You should have performed the actions in the below order:

1) Activate flags

2) Reproduce the issue

3) Obtain schedul2.log

Thank you.

Riddlespoon,

I am sending a Private Message to you the link to our FTP account. Please obtain Acronis system report from the Help section and upload the file.

Thank you.

Oleg,
Orignally on my Windows 8 system, I created a full disk backup task to an external drive and scheduled it (for testing purposes) to create a differential backup every hour. When the system was not "sleeping" the task worked properly. When the system was "sleeping" the task did not start, but if I woke the computer up from "sleep" mode, the backup would run immediately.
The settings were to "wake" the computer, "keep" the computer from sleeping, and do not run missed tasks at startup. Windows 8 was set to use the default "Balanced" power plan. This is a desktop system.
I downloaded the schedule manager, using schedule manager, stopped the service, un-installed the service, rebooted, used schedule manager to install the service and start it. Then rescheduled my backup task and it worked okay ("waking" the system from "sleep" mode to backup every hour) until the system clock reached midnight, then no longer worked. I will continue testing on the Windows 8 system. If I can provide you with any info/reports, please let me know.

Looking at Riddlespoons "get_list.png" the User 2 account NT Authority had an entry on my system before using shedule manager to stop, remove, install and start the scheduler sevice. After rescheduling my backup task and using "get list", the User 2 entries were not re-created.

James

 James,

Thank you for clarification.

It looks like I was able to reproduce the issue. I will check it again and will update the post.

Thank you.

 Riddlespoon and James,

I was able to reproduce the issue and added it to our tracking system.

Thank you.

Hello Peter,

Thank you for your question.

We are working on the issues reported in this thread and we will keep everyone posted.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hello,

Add me to the list. I have Windows 8 RTM and Acronis True Image 2013 Trial. I have a daily backup scheduled with the wake from sleep option. This worked once. Since then I can see that my computer wakes from sleep at the scheduled time but the backup does not run. Running the backup manually works fine. The 3 services mentioned above are running.

Hello Anton,

thanks for your reply.

I will add a logfile tomorrow as soon as I get on my PC with the "faulty" Trueimage installation.

Ich have the same Problems with daily backup scheduled on W8 64 bit. It is an End User Version from TechNet, not the RTM Version.
In ATIH 2012 there where always an icon in System tray, now it's gone with 2013. The only icon in system tray ist the icon of "Nonstop Backup" but not the other one of ATIH.

 Hello all,

We have investigated the issue and we have found that there are several reasons of the encountered issue. Actually, we should try to cover all of them.

That's why we need the diagnostic information requested in this post.

If you experience some difficulties in obtaining schedul2.log, we can set the appropriate tool by means of a remote session.

You may contact me via Private Message if you have any questions in regards to this issue.

Thank you.

PS

James F, the issue you have experienced is separated to a different case.

 Hello Riddlespoon,

The log file provided doesn't contain the necessary information. It looks like it was created not in time when the issue occurred.

Could you please collect the log file again?

Thank you.

Oleg, it is a little hard to create the file because the issue is that nothing occurs. The previously attached schedul2.log was created at the time the backups were supposed to run but didn't.

 Hello all,

Riddlespoon,

Thank you for your answer. The log file doesn't contain the information that we need. If it is possible, please reproduce the issue again and send us a new log file.

It would be useful to obtain schedul2.log from all of the persons who experiences the same issue, because the root cause of the issue may be different.

This information will let us investigate the problem under consideration thoroughly and provide you with a possible solution.

Thank you.

 Hello gltovar,

We are trying to obtain schedule2.log from those of our customers who experiences the mentioned behavior. Are you able to provide us with it?

Also, please check your Power options in Control Panel. Malfunction caused by the Sleep/hybernate modes has been separated to a different case.

Oleg.

I have performed the following steps:
1. Run schedmgr.exe and set logflags support. Time 9:15pm
2. Opened True Image Home 2013 and set the Schedule time for the first backup to 9:17pm, and the second backup to 9:18pm
3. Closed True Image Home 2013
4. Waited until 9.26pm and entered set logflags 0 in schedmgr
5. Uploaded the attached schedul2.log file

Neither of the scheduled backups ran. Presumably schedul2.log has captured whatever didn't happen during this time.

 Hello Ridlespoon,

Thank you very much for the file provided.

Hi All,

I have the exact same issue. Full RTM version of windows 8 Enterprise 64 bit. Missed scheduled tasks don't seem to run, it is hit and miss, lately more miss.

Sometimes it will fire up at boot, most times lately missed tasks will never run. Checked all services etc and logs. Obviously from this post it appear more common.

Since it appears there is no technical support after purchasing the product without paying yet more money, I have resorted to posting here as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Me too, i have exactly the same problem and this time, it is on the official release Window 8 Pro.
i have no error. The 3 services of Acronis are started.
But the scheduling of saves does not work.
i don't see the Scheduler task on the system tool in the left bottom desktop. No error messages.
It worked perfectly upon Windows 7 ultimate.

I had the same issue after upgrading from Win 7 Ultimate to Win 8 Pro and fixed it by repair installing 2013. Let's see if the problem reappears...

I have just had a thought. Those of us who have downloaded W8 via our Technet/MSDN accounts will have been using the W8 Pro/Enterprise version, those who have purchased W8 upgrade from a shop may well be using standard W8.

It is possible that the enabled VHD booting and the few other utilities that are enabled might be a cause of the scheduler problem, I'm wondering if it would be helpful to separate out W8 from W8 Pro in our reports, just so we can see any common factors (apart from it being W8) amongst us.

I can say that the beta version of 2013, worked OK with the W8 RTM, but since then not only has W8 had some updates, but of course 2013 had same changes.

I also have the problem that Acronis True Image 2013 doesn't start the scheduled backup. I bought an update version especially for Windows 8. Is there some already a solution for this problem? At the moment I have to start is manually every day.

Thank you for your reply, I did the repair now. Normally my backup starts at 9:00 am. We will see if it runs tomorrow :-)

 Hello all,

Thank you for your notes.

As we can see, at least two reasons of the issue have been identified:

1) The 1st one is the upgrade to Windows 8 over Windows 7. I assume we can't improve this behavior, because the issue is caused by upgrade installation of the OS.

2) The 2nd case is compatibility with hibernate/sleep mode. This case is under investigation now.

If you experience the same issue and the circumstances don't cover the above points please let us know about it.

Thank you.

 PS

I assume we can't improve this behavior, because the issue is caused by upgrade installation of the OS.

But we will try to find the reason, appropriate task has been created.

Thank you.

Since i have reinstalled TIH2013, i have no more problems, even after the computer is put into hibernate/sleep mode. I think that the pb with the scheduler is produced by the full migration in place from Windows 7 (ultimate) to Windows 8 Pro.
Best Regards

I did a repair but it had no effect. The backup doesn't start automatically.

Rob,

I had the same issue, did a repair, solved it, but the backups stopped running today for some unknown reason.

As a workaround, I scheduled my tasks using Windows Task Scheduler:
- from within ATI, create a shortcut for the backup you want to schedule (use the gear menu of the task, choose more)
- launch Windows Task Scheduler
- Right click on Task Library
- Create a new task
- Name the task, select "high privileges",
- in the trigger tab, choose new and schedule the way you want,
- in the action tab, choose new, run a program. Browse to Acronis\TrueImageHome\TrueImageLauncher.exe
- Right click backup shortcut your created, choose properties,
- Copy the /Script"=LONGKEY to the parameters options of the action in the task setup,
- Choose your last options and save the task.

Same issue.
Clean install Windows 8 Pro and True Image 2013. Scheduled backup does not run, nor does the missed backup. PC does not hibernate or sleep. I will try a few of the suggestions in earlier posts and report back, however, I can create this on two separate machines running Windows 8 Pro (both clean installs).

It is an intermittent problem, it looks like. My schedules work sporadically (ie certain days only), while my Windows task scheduler workaround is working great.

Please try this as it worked for me:

control panel>search "power">click "change what the power buttons do">click "change settings that are current unavailable"> un-check "turn on fast startup">save changes.

Then restart and test a scheduled backup. Seems to work after re-enableing "Fast Startup"....but my guess is it won't for long.

Changing the power settings didn't work.

The problem is intermittent with my scheduled backups working about every 3 or 4 days or so - no pattern!

It is now two months since first reporting the problem - it is about time Acronis provided a fix!
