Trying to do a disk restore using Acronis true image home 2011

Thread needs solution

My Desktop is a HP running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I have one hard drive portioned into a C and D Drive.

I created a backup of my C Drive and "System State" about 7 days ago, and that file is called: GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib. Then about 3 days later, I was hit by a virus that Norton Internet Security let through and that virus damaged some of my systems files. Norton says they have now wiped the virus off my desktop.

I have a C Drive and a D Drive on my desk top. I have a separate backup of my D Drive, which basically contains the files from the maker of my PC to use for a fresh from the factory restore, which would wipe off all my data files and set the system back to the point it was when it was shipped to me about 1 year ago.

When I bring up my backup file named: GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib and expand it, it shows the back up file contains BOTH a C and D Drive (see image 1 and 2 and 2a). I do not think a D Drive should be showing up (see image 3). I have a separate back up for my "actual" D drive (see image 4) that I do not want to restore at this point since I dont need to. I just want to recovery my C Drive.

I am not sure what the "System State" back up feature in Acronis is, but that was selected when I did the backup of the C Drive and perhaps the System State backup is what is showing up in the GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib backup as the D Drive backup.

When I look at the files in the "actual" D Drive backup that Acronis made, I do see some of the files listed within the GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib D Drive back up showing up in the actual D Drive backup, but there are also other files and folders listed in the "actual" D Drive backup that do not show up in the GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib D Drive back up. I do not know why there is a D Drive showing up in my C Drive backup. The C Drive folder showing up in this back up folder is correct, it matches what is on my C Drive now.

So I am not sure how to proceed with the recovery from the bootable media rescue disk. What is confusing here is the fact that the GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib backup also is showing some files in a D Drive. I do not want to over right my actual D Drive, which is the folder that contains my HP Desktop FACTORY RESTORE files, in case I would need those files to do a factory restore. I do have the actual backup of the D drive so if that happens, I guess I can come behind the restore of the GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib and do a restore of the GE-Desktop_D_Drive-Factory Image.tib.

But I am also concerned that the desktop might not boot up if I do the restore using the GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib backup which contains this System State folder which I think is showing up as the D Drive. Any ideas on how to proceed?

What does Acronis consider the System State backup to be? What would happen if I deleted the D Drive portion of the GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib backup folder? Not sure I can even do that though. But that would leave me with just the C Drive. If the backup folder made by Acronis is altered like that, would it still recover the C Drive within the GE-Desktop_C_Drive and_System2011-01-13.tib backup? Lots of unkowns here.

Of course I also am experiencing the know issue with Acronis where using the bootable rescue disk, the Linux operating system is not seeing my hard drives correctly, but I think I can figure that one by using the suggested match up the size of the drives solutions.

Thanks for any advice on how to proceed with doing a restore.

The System State backup searches for your startup and Windows system files.

However I'm not sure that this is how you managed to get two 'D' partitions over two images.

I suspect what might have happened is that you selected the Disk option which wiould have automatically included the two partitions.

As far as your immediate problem, just untick the 'D' partition selection and TI will only recover the C: partition.

If the virus was on the C partition, I suggest running an AV scan over the complete image file before restoring or if Nortons won't scan inside the tib container, mount the C partition and run the AV on the mounted image. Although this will only tell you if the virus is contained in the image.

Thanks Colin B for your comments. I did manage this morning to get my system restored successfully.
