If you're creating these images within the Windows environment, try the rescue CD and see if that works.

Hello Arthur,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

I would recommend you to do the following to solve the issue:

- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)

- Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r" (where DISK is the partition letter you need to check) for every partition that is visible in My Computer. Please note, that checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

To make sure that the memory module of your machine is not corrupt as this can be the reason of the issue please download one of the archives depending on what media type you are going to use:

- diskette http://www.memtest.org/download/1.70/memtest86+-1.70.floppy.zip

- USB Flash drive http://www.memtest.org/download/1.70/memtest86+-1.70.exe.zip

- CD http://www.memtest.org/download/1.70/memtest86+-1.70.iso.zip

If the issue still persists use the following step-by-step troubleshooting guide.

Many thanks. I ran chkdsk on three drives: C:/ (drive I wish to backup), E:/ (USB connected LcCie d2 quadra backup drive) and F:/ (USB connected Maxtor backup drive). No bad sectors indicated anywhere.
I have run the memory test in the past. I would think that any memory problem would affect a backup to any external drive. System backup seems to be fine when I direct it to the small F:/ drive and only fails on the E:/ drive. Results of backup after chkdsk shown in the screen shots following.

I have run the memory test for some 13 hours with 10 passes and no errors. I reformatted the external hard drive, uninstalled Acronis TI Home 2009, manually cleared all evidence of Acronis from the registry and re-installed ATIH 2009 build 9,796. I then ran a full system backup to the external hard drive and the validation returned exactly the same error.

I am out of ideas and Acronis tech support seems not to be much interested unfortunately.

Hello Arthur,

Sorry for the delay with the response. The issue can be related to the USB cable or other hardware malfunction.

In order to investigate the issue please do the following:

1) Save backup archive to internal drive and verify it..

2) If backup archive creates successfully do the following:

- Download the checksum utility from http://www.irnis.net/files/xcsci.exe

- Unpack and run the application and click on the ellipsis sign to browse and select the backup archive you just cretaed;

- Ckick "Start" button;

- Write down MD5 output

- Then copy and paste backup archive to external drive and receive MD5 for this backup.

- Compare two results and let me know the results.

The different MD5 output of the same backup mean that there are hardware errors. It can be the cable, USB port, etc., I recommend you to do the following:

1) Upgrade USB drivers of the external hard drive.

2) Try to use another USB cable

3) Use another USB port

4) If external drive is connected through HUB, then connect it directly.

If the issue persists use the following KB article to troubleshot corrupted backup archives.

I noticed you are not using the latest build.  You may want to update the build, I am not certain if the issue is addressed in the new build at this point, however it is generally a good idea to be up to date. You can download it from your account under Registered Products.

Let me know if the issue persists.

Thank You.
