Unallocated space

Thread needs solution

My computer is reporting that I am running out of space on the hard drive.
On investigation I have found that there is 19GB of unallocated space. The drive is only 40GB.

I have tried to extend volume C: using Windows Disk Management but it failed saying that “the volume was not valid for extending”

From postings on the Acronis web site I am following advice to create a Secure Zone, delete it and then allocate the deleted area to C:

I reached the point in the process where Acronis – True Image Home 2010 - shows what the disk will look like when it finishes the operation, but was concerned that the SZ file area shows FAT 32, whereas C: is shown as NTFS.

Question – Is Acronis telling me that the File system for the unallocated space is FAT32, which would perhaps explain why my first attempt failed or, that is what it will be when the Secure Zone is created?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Use of the Secure Zone is one method. First you create the Zone and then you delete the zone from within the Acronis program. As part of the deletion, TrueImage should ask where the unallocted space is to be reassigned and then you can expand your partitions.

If you are running Windows 7, you can also do the resize from the Windows Disk Management.

If you have the Acronis Disk Director, you can use that.

If using XP, another free alternative is to use the Mini-Tool Partition Wizard
wizard. It is easy to use and straight forward.

To use the Partition Wizard, download the file and burn it to CD and then boot from the Partition Wizard CD. Right click on the partition to be resized and choose the move/resize option. Again, hover the mouse pointer over the partition end until you see the adjustment arrows appear. Then click and hold the arrows in view and drag the partition edge to maximum right so all unallocated space is consumed. When using the Partition Wizard, the changes do not become final until you apply the changes from the top left menu.
