Universal Restore Install Doesn't Match Documentation

Thread needs solution

I downloaded the 2015 Universal Restore "MSI" file and did the install. Without going into a step-by-step description of what what went wrong, let me just say that what happened didn't match the documentation.

For example, the documentation says to run the executable file in the %CommonProgramFiles(x86)%\Acronis\UniversalRestore folder. Well there is no executable file and there is no UniversalRestore folder.

There is, however, a UniversalBoot folder that contains 32bit and 64bit zip files. I explored the help file and its telling me to install a WinPE environment consisting of the Automated Installation Kit (AIK). What?

Help!

John,

Run the Universal...... from the shortcut under Acronis in your Windows Start menu.

If you want to make a WinPE version of the recovery media, you will need to download and install either WAIK or ADK, depends if you are using W7 or W8/8.1. The builder is supposed to decide which of these you require and wander off and download it for you (well that is what I understand, I already have WAIK and ADK installed on my systems, so that bit doesn't apply). IF you only want to make Linux based media, then all the components required are already on your system.

Colin,

What a disaster!

First, thanks for telling me where to find "Universal . . ." I found it and successfully created a universal boot USB device. Don't you think that information should be in the documentation?

Secondly, I booted using the universal boot USB device and it worked, although there was a problem with a Windows 8.1 driver that couldn't be found. So OK, I'll resolve that problem when I get back into Windows.

Here's where the trouble begins. I lost the audio driver in Windows 8.1. No amount of uninstalling and re-installing the audio driver fixed the problem. I had to restore using the Acronis backup I made. At least I know the restore function works.

Not knowing why I lost the audio driver I booted again using the universal boot USB device, and I again lost the audio driver. Now I know never to do that again.

I don't know what to say other than what a disaster 2015 has been for me. I don't like the new interface, I don't like the loss of several features, and I don't like what happened to me regarding creating and using the Universal Rescue Media feature.
