Unreliable and unstable True Image (TI)-2014 back-up files, build 6673.

Thread needs solution

Using Acronis True Image 2014, build 6673 under Windows 8.1.

My system:
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 1 physical, 8 logical proc., 4 cores.
Operating system: 64-bit Windows 8.1 (6.3.9600)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760, 2.048 MB memory
Operating system: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit 9600
Memory: 16 GB
Drives: C: 250 GB SSD, D: 3TB (Data), T: 1TB (test), U: 3TB (backup), Z: 3TB (external USB 3.0)

Creating a full back up from a rescue-media-Flash-Drive (USB stick) created a “ghost backup”. This back-up is not visible under Windows 8.1 in Windows Explorer and not with TI

I have 2 sticks that holds TI, one USB-2.0 and USB 3.0. Both are erroneous concerning the functioning of TI. The backups are only visible from the TI on the boot-stick.

Starting TI from a boot-CD does not see a former backup made with boot-USB-stick.

A full back-up from boot-CD returned without errors and a visible back-up file that was visible from the boot-CD as well as under in Windows-8.1 Explorer.
However clicking on the (boot-CD-created) backup file under W8.1 in Explorer gave the following message “Archive open Error: Cannot continue the operation because the backup is corrupted …..”
And after a while this back-up-file disappeared and also TI (under Windows) does not see this this file!

Summarizing all these phenomena’s (and other non-mentioned-problems I have), this TI 2014 (new build) is a very unreliable and unstable program. When I started (in December 2013) with TI, my PC became slow on numeral places (and I do have a new and reasonable fast computer).

I have this TI-application now some 3 months operational, but due to the unreliability, it cost me hours to check and double-check whether a backup is correct and workable. I had no problems at all with any of my applications or Windows 8.1 environment, until I installed Acronis-TI 2014.

An application as this should give us confidence with an unquestionable and 100% correct functioning. If we cannot trust on it, as this is now a pain in the neck, what is then the use of having a backup with TI?

What is the credibility of an application where the log file says that all the back-up operations succeeded, inclusive the validation; and the reality is that I cannot find or use the file, or is corrupted?

Last weekend I have uninstalled TI completely and also ran the cleaning utility. My computer is now reacting normal (and fast) again.

If there is anyone that can bring me to other thoughts by means of good advises and improvements, I will consider re-installing TI again.

And not to forget all the other -non mentioned-problems that prohibits me and you using TI –as it should to be- an unburdening application.

Acronis is only willing to give support for free if one cannot recover a backup. I do not want to wait for this to happen when the backups are made-up in this unreliable state.
Acronis is protecting itself and giving us also extra work and responsibilities in the user manual. See 6.1.1.2 preparing for recovery. You are advised to verify (all) backups made in another environment. If you make backups with the Rescue-boot-CD you should validate these in your computer-OS environment (Windows 8.1 in my case) and I also checked this the other way around. This is a lot of work validating all these back-ups. Not doing these cross-platform validations on the back-up files seems to introduce risks when needed for recovery! And In my case I have discovered lots of problems and unusable backups.

I am very interested whether Acronis support is reading this and is willing to solve these problem and react on this subject.

You indicate that you are using the latest build of 2014, did you update to that build or did you clean install it? Most users have found much more success with the new build when they first uninstall the old version, run the clean up utility, then clean install the new build. Not sure if that would solve all your issues but it might help.

I did the update to the new build. For the moment I am very curious whether Acronis support is going to move. If I read about all the problems on this forum, there is something very wrong with this application.

Bob, tanks for your response and advise.

Enchantec.... Interesting that you would say that. So why then does Acronis continue to offer an "Upgrade" version on their website. The new 2014 build is no better than the 2013. This is horrifically slow. I am getting ready to uninstall and move on to something else completely. My frustration level is immeasurable! Tom
