Upgrade to 2013 not allowed

Thread needs solution

I just bought 2012 on line and Disk Director 11 from Fry's 2 weeks ago but was informed by Acronis that since I did not buy 2012 in a store they will not upgrade me. that is pretty Micky Mouse. I am scrapping both products and will find another vendor for software.

Not sure if I qualify for free upgrade. Purchased full version at Amazon.com on July 17th 2012. However, I read in a previous topic that once you own the product for more than 30 days you DO NOT qualify for free upgrade. If that's true, it's rather lame as I was not aware that 2013 version would be released this early in the year.
Any input greatly appreciated.
I was a user of Symantec Ghost and their upgrade policy was a lot more liberal.

@Billybob,

Have you checked to see if Fry's will exchange it for 2013, which will depend on their customer service policy?

@Carl,

Normally Acronis don't give free upgrades to those who have purchased from a 3rd party (such as Amazon) because they have their own money back system. which allows you to return an item and exchange it for a different item - 2013 being different to 2012. Most large online places allow this.

Thanks all for your input but it has been over 30 days since my purchase only by a few days and Amazon's return policy only allows 30 days to exchange software for IDENTICAL software. Why would they want to restock a basically outdated version and send me a new version.
This is my first purchase of an Acronis product and possibly my last unless they lighten up with their policies. I really do like the product.
I will always have an eye out however to see what the competition offers. I have no problem switching back to Ghost knowing they probably would have no problem with a free upgrade to a product purchased only 40 days ago.

Carl,

I don't know the actual agreement Acronis have with their distributors, I can only go on how software in general is sold to resellers.

Most shops / online stores purchase via a distributor (some do deal direct), the software is sold to the retailer in a similar way to books and magazines, that is, it is on sale and return. Often an agreement is reached concerning out of date material for which a credit is given. This enables the reseller to always be able to offer the most up to date product. Note: a reseller doesn't have to return what they don't use.

I would assume this also applies to Amazon and other online resellers.

The problem (I assume from Acronis' point of view) is that if they allowed an upgrade for a product purchased through a reseller, they could be in a position where less scrupleous people would claim their free upgrade and then the person wanders off to the reseller and claims a refund with the subsequent action being that Acronis would then credit the reseller and have ended up giving someone a copy of their product free.

Thanks to all for your input. I have come to the conclusion that if I want ATIH 2013, I will have to pay 29.95 even though I just purchased the retail version of ATIH 2012 less than 40 days ago. As stated previously, I like the product and will continue to use until I find something better to replace it.
I know for a fact that it won't be Acronis. Please consider this my last reply in this forum and the case is closed.
Thanks again for all your input.
