Upgrading 2009 to 2011 (SOLVED)

Thread needs solution

I know, 2011 is not the latest, but I purchased the upgrade in late 2010 and now I need to use it.
My question is, must I install 2011 over top of 2009 in order for the upgrade to work?
Or does filename: ATIH2011_6942_en-US.exe install a new version without going over the top, i.e. can I uninstall 2009 and start fresh with 2011?
And I'm hoping/assuming that 2011 is Win7/64-bit compatible?
Thank you for any assistance!

No. You should uninstall 2009 first. Make sure the Acronis devices in the device manager are actually uninstalled. Check also this post to remove remnants of the snapapi driver, if any. http://kb.acronis.com/content/1620
Then reboot,
Then install 2011.

You will need your 2009 license number to be able to install the 2011 upgrade version, and, of course, you 2011 license number.

And I'm hoping/assuming that 2011 is Win7/64-bit compatible?

Yes, this is what I use.

If its an upgrade it will ask for your 2009 serial key when you install. You can get that from your current installed copy. See http://kb.acronis.com/content/1832 for some tips. Your serial key is also available at www.acronis.com. Log in to your account.

Wow, you guys really rock the replies.
Just what I needed, and then some... meaning you included stuff I didn't even know I should be looking for.
I really appreciate the great heads up you provided.

--> I might add that the "Retrieve Serial Number" button on the Customer Service and Support page does not work with Chrome browser (newest Stable Channel Update), and I had to go to IE to get it to function.

Hopefully when I uninstall 2009 from my system, the stored backup images will work fine with 2011.
Guess I'll find that out when I get to it, although I realized as I typed that, that the best thing to do when 2011 is installed is to create a fresh image right away. ;)

Again, appreciate the awesome assistance.

BEFORE uninstalling 2009, be sure and do a complete backup of your system with 2009 installed. This must be a full and complete backup which includes all partitions. This can also be done with the 2009 Recovery CD--which you need to keep anyway. Do not destroy your 2009 CD as you never know when it might be needed. It may never be needed but then again, who knows at this point in time...........

This is NOT forecasting trouble--just a reasonable safety preventive.

The reason you need this backup is that you need to know that you can always go back to when 2009 was installed should you have a conflict with 2011.

You're 100% correct, Grover, and I appreciate the reminder.
That is a big part of the reason why I started using ATI to begin with... to be able to restore to a previous image if a major software install went sideways on me, and indeed that has happened a time or two over the years. The other reason, obviously, is in case of an uninvited malicious guest rearing its ugly head. I'm a bit more in favor of restoring a clean image than I am in trying to remove a rootkit or some other nasty.
So I'll keep your recommendation in mind going forward, Grover.
Thank you.
