Upgrading from ATI2012 Home to ATI2013 Home

Thread needs solution

Hi Folks,

A few days ago, I decided to upgrade from True Image Home 2012 to the 2013 version. The installation was going well until - crash - blue screen of death (BSOD). I tried everything but my laptop was dead. Needless to say, I was not a happy bunny.

Fortunately, I had created a disk image recently and, today, I have restored my laptop from that image. I would like to upgrade to the 2013 version (I have paid for it) but I obviously do not want a repeat of my first attempt.

Has anyone else had a similar unfortunate experience? Any suggestions as to what may have caused this and what to do to avoid it happening again?

P.S. I should add that I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3.

Before installing 2013, uninstall your current version and then run the Acronis True Image Cleanup Utility for 2011-2013: http://kb.acronis.com/content/34876
Be careful to follow all instructions, including not allowing the utility to reboot until you've made the Registry edits.

Hi tuttle,

Many thanks for getting back to me and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I am horrified that I was allowed to get to the 2013 installation without any warnings that I needed to run the ATI Cleanup Utility. Acronis is supposed to be a safety net and yet, through lack of information to the contrary, it allowed me to go ahead and crash my machine - big time! Not impressed. Perhaps I should go back to Macrium Reflect.

Needless to say, I am very grateful to you for drawing my attention to this. Perhaps I'll summon up the courage to try updating again to the 2013 version - making sure that I have an up-to-date image beforehand!

Thanks again.

The steps I recommended are not required, and many ATI users install 2013 over top of 2012 without issues. I recommend uninstallation and cleanup before installing new version because it's a more prudent course, to avoid the small percentage of situations in which problems may occur.

ATI is certainly not the only application that can have issues when upgraded in place. I expect Macrium also has such situations.

Hi tuttle,

I have been out of action for several weeks but I have returned to this outstanding task.

Reading the instructions in the link you provided has left me a bit nervous. For example, at the end, I need to check that certain strings do not appear in the registry. That's OK but the article fails to say what I should do if I find stuff that shouldn't be there. I'm always very edgy when making changes to the registry. Is it not OK just to uninstall 2012 and then install 2013?

Thanks in advance.

Refer to my previous post. IF you choose not to do uninstall and cleanup, that's your choice. You already have my recommendation.

OK, fair enough. But what do you advise I do if there are unwanted remnants in the registry? As I said previously, the article accompanying the utility download sheds no light on this.

If those entries still exist at that point, delete the values..

Do not allow the cleanup utlity to reboot your system. You can reboot manually after making any required registry edits.

Be sure to have a full backup before beginning the removal process in case you have problems.
