Using bluray discs to perform a backup

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I am considering purchasing a bluray writer with which to perform backups via my acronis trueimage 2013 has anyone used this media, if so how sucessfull is it? Does it support disc spanning?

I have used 2012 and 2013 to backup to optical media directly, and it does support spanning, BUT

I do not recommend recording a backup directly to any type of optical disks.

True Image has a feature that allows the backup image file (.tib file) to be split according to your needs.

Best results are to perform the backup to a spare hard disk (internal or external) having Acronis split the backup file to the size you need for your optical media, and then use good quality burning software to burn the individual backup image files to the optical media.

Validate the backup image contained on the disks before deleting the backup files on the spare hard disk.

This method requires extra space (and time) for the backup, but provides much more reliable recovery media.

Thanks for the input, I too have used the method you state to backup to DVDs but now bluray recorders are cheap I thought might be a good time to use this type of media.

Given you can buy a 1TB hard disk for around £52, it is really a marginal saving using Bluray 1TB of disk would cost c. £40 plus cost of drive (if you have to purchase 1. In reality, you would probably end up with disks partially filled, as you backups won't be a perfect mutiple of 25 MB.

Hard disks are much more reliable (and much faster especially if you have to verfy the write operation on the bluray disks).

Martin,

I agree 100% with your statements concerning costs and time involved, but long term storage on Blu-ray writable media (approx. 100-150 years) should exceed the lifespan of a hard disk drive.
