Using True Image to upgrade my computer operating system

Thread needs solution

I am upgrading my PC from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro. This will require, according to Bill Gates, the re-installation of all applications and the backing up and restoring of all data. If I use Acronis True Image to back up my disk and partitions prior to the upgrade, can I do a simple restore after the installation of W-7 or will this reinstall W-XP?

A restore of a backup of an XP system will cause the system to revert back to what it was at the time of backup. You will lose all evidence of Windows 7.

The only value of your backup at this point is to transfer personal data such as letters, photos, etc and that is best done by simply dragging and dropping from the backup to your new system.

There are some programs out there which will allow you to transfer your programs without an install but you will have to do some searching as I don't have any links. Perhaps someone else may have a link for you to examine.

Do a google search for "transfer cable"+ "Windows 7"

Will the system revert even if I use the "Do not overwrite system files and folders" option in the recovery?

I would create a complete image of any drives you have prior to the clean install of Windows 7 in the event that something goes wrong and you need to revert back to your prior XP configuration. If the install goes well, you may be able to restore individual files/folders from the system image (I know you can do this in Symantec Ghost, and I'm pretty sure TI has this functionality). Others who use TI may be able to comment more on this as I've not tried it.

But you don't want to restore the image to your hdd after you install Win 7.

Captain Greg:

Even if you could upgrade from XP to Windows 7 you really don't want to do that. There have been significant changes in the Windows operating systems since XP. Programs install differently and must make new registry entries. If you short-circuit this process then you'll always wonder if future problems with software are due to your shortcuts or not. A clean install is absolutely essential.  Trying to fight this is like tilting at windmills.

If you choose that the process would abort. It is like with other software when you go to delete something and they ask you 2 or 3 times if you really want to delete.

K0lO - I shouldn't have used the word upgrade and I've edited my post for future readers. By "upgrade" I meant moving from one OS to a new one, not an in-place upgrade. I have never done an in place upgrade from one OS to another, but rather have done a clean install of the new OS, re-installed all apps and restored any files I needed. I would not recommend an in-place upgrade to the OP but rather a clean install of Windows 7.

My apologies - I meant to direct my comments to Captain Greg. Sorry about that. I've edited my reply #4 to indicate the intended recipient.

Hi CAptain Greg,

Have you got what you are looking for ? In fact, I thinking to up-grade my OS from Window XP to Window 7,
but i counldn't find any software that can help me to migrate all my applications and data from my old PC (Window XP) to new PC (Window 7)
without re-install the applications one by one.

Don't mind share with me if you found your solution. Thank you in advance :)
