Validating backups
Hello everyone. Just a general question. I don't seem able to find a definitive answer in the user manual. Am I right in understanding that I can make any number of incremental backups (obviously after the initial full backup) and then validate the entire 'chain' or must validation take place after each and every backup? Many thanks, Niels R.

Like Pat says, you don't have to validate after every incremental backup. However, IMO it is a good idea because if you create a bad incremental all the incrementals made after it will be useless.

Hi all!
Thank you for your comments.
I just wanted to confirm Pat and Seekforever words, and add that in case validation of the incremental backup states, that the file is corrupted, it doesn't necessarily mean that the entire chain is damaged.
We usually advise to validate the incrementals, selecting one by one backwards in the chain, till you receive a successful validation message. After that you can delete the corrupted piece of the chain and create new incremental.
Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!
Thank you!

Hi Yana,
I would suggest that from my experience if you do not validate a backup set when it is created there is no way you can validate it afterwards via the GUI.
i.e. Create a full backup and incremental scheme and run it until a you have several sets of data e.g Fulls + n Incrementals
Now try and validate any backup that is NOT in the last set and view the files ATIH opens and reads in resource monitor (I am assuming the use of Windows 7 here BTW).
From what I see there is no way it validates the requested file.
Also even if you open the backup location via the GUI running as Administrator using UAC from a limited user account and asking ATIH to validate any backup it will just not work.
I also note that if you have done a backup and the data is in the XML database but not yet backed up (because the next incremental is not yet due) if you restore the latest backup (the one you just took) and then continue with your backup plan so that a new backup set (Full+incrementals) is created. When you look back (via the GUI) at the images available to restore the one that was "missing" from the XML database because it was not backed up is of course still missing and any attempts as far as I can see to "add" it to the XML file fails. In this situation ATIH needs to ensure it has an up-to-date copy of the XML database appended to the backup it has just created so that when it is restored the database does indeed have all the necessary detail.
So IMHO there are still some MAJOR issues with ATIH 2011 that need resolving ASAP!

RayG,
I don't experience the issue you are describing validating within older chains.
The issue about the last backup before a restore not showing in the UI is a known bug, but it doesn't really matter if you restore through the CD (which is recommended), since you can browse to the actual TIB file easily.
That said, I agree there are a lot of issues with ATI 2011. Hopefully the next build will fix the majority of them.
