From what I see it is the same as before. When ATI creates a backup, it inserts chcksums in the archive. When you validate, ATI recalculates the chcksums and compares with those stored in the archive. If there is a difference, the archive is deemed corrupted, otherwise it is valid.
The second verification is the integrity of the backup chain. Validation makes sure that all files necessary for a backup are present/findable and valid.
In short, validation verifies the integrity of the backup archive, not the fidelity to the data that has been backed up.
