One clone operation = One full disk (or entirePC) image (or disk and partition backup) operation + one restore operation. Doing the latter is safer than the former, because the original disk is not in the system.
All cloning and restore operations should be done from the recovery CD.

If you have images of your disk stored on a USB disk, if your disk dies completely, you would purchase a new disk, place it at the same spot as the olde disk, boot the computer on the recovery CD and restore one image to the new blank drive. Your computer would be exactly as it were before, with all the boot records, OS, apps, files that were on the old disk.
