When booting from recovery disk - pc locks up at acronis screen

Thread needs solution

Hello, I just purchased Acronis True Image Home 2010 and am trying to make a recovery disk. I started acronis, select tools and utilities, then select create bootable rescue media. I follow the process:

Select acronis true home image (full version)
I dont enter any bootable media parameters
I then choose CR-RW drive (e:)
Then click next and proceed to start

The processing window appears and the bootable media is created without any errors and the window pops up and says bootable media created successfully.

So, to test my media, I restart my pc with the media in the drive. The screen comes up where I can choose Windows or Acronis True Image Home (Full Version). I am able to select with the keyboard but the mouse does not respond. So I select acronis true image full version and then the next screen appears and this is where the problem begins.

The next screen just sits there without response. The screen says www.acronis.com at the top. Below that there is a pic of a pc and monitor in a bubble and then below that it says Acronis True Image Home 2010 Plus Pack.

It never responds and I'm unable to do anything but reset my pc and just boot into windows.

I have also tried creating an ISO file and burning it to a disk but the same thing occurs when I try to boot from it. I also downloaded bootable media and was able to boot into acronis but at that point, how do I use my image to recover the pc in the state it was in when I created the image??

Can you please help?

Win 7 64bit
6 gigs ram
2 x Nvidia GTX 275
Core i7

Also, i'm doing this from a fresh install of Win 7 64 with current windows updates and video drivers and acronis the only installations made.

Thanks

If the downloaded ISO works, then that's the one to use. It has a different loader and usually more updated drivers.

Grover's guides are a good place to start learning how to use TI. They can be found in Section 7 of his sticky thread. Though written for previous versions, the basic principles are still the same.

Was there a specific part of the restore procedure that was causing you problems?

The backup contains an image of the disk it was made from in the condition it was in at at the time the backup task was started -- subsequent changes to the source disk are not included inthe backup, even if the subsequent changes were made while the backup was being made (for example, if you make a backup while in Windows, ATI takes a snapshot of the disk at the start of the backup process and that is what goes into the backup). If the bootCD is loading and you get to the ATI window, you can follow the manual to select Restore and then select the backup file you want to restore then select the hardisk onto which you want to restore the backup. If you're not getting to the ATI window, then the bootcd is still hanging up and you will probably need a diff iso from Acronis.

. . . . . . Thanks

I did a few things: I first created boot media in acronis true image home 2010. That does not work because it locks up at the screen I described in the first post. So I have given up on trying to create my own boot media.

I then created an ISO and saved it on an external drive connected to my PC via eSata.

I downloaded and burned the image of the downloaded ISO to a DVD and am able to boot from that into the acronis. From there, can I navigate to my image that is saved on my external drive and restore from there? So basically I can use the downloaded media to boot from and then use the ISO on my external drive to restore????

Sorry, never done this before so its all new to me.

thanks

The terminology is abit confusing so let's see if I can keep it straight. An ISO is a file format for optical disks. The term is often used as shrthand for "a file in the ISO format." The ISO you can download from Acronis is to be burned onto an optical disk -- Thus burned, your optical disk is a bootable disk with ATI on it. It's another way to create an ATI bootCD. You burn the ISO to optical disk and then boot with the disk to run ATI. Then you navigate to your backup file and use it to restore.

When you made your backup, you created a backup file and it had a name and went into a particular location, that is the file you want to select for restoration.

Ah, Ok. I think I am understanding now. I apologize for being dense. Again, I've never done this before and I'm not in the computer industry. I know enough to be dangerous..LOL.

Ok, so I cannot save an ISO file to an extrenal hard drive and use it to restore???

I have to actually back up my entire HD to an external HD and then use the ISO burned onto a disc to begin the restore process. The ISO serves the purpose of booting into acronis and then navigating to my HD backup files on the external drive and restoring my internal HD to the state that it was in at the time of the back up.

Here is what I am trying to do: I was trying to create two restore or back up points or states.

First I do a fresh install of Win 7 64 bit, download and install all windows updates, video drivers, sound drivers, etc.. At that point, create a backup of my PC in that state so when I restore I have my drivers and updates installed which prevents me from having to reinstall Windows and downloading all the updates again.

Next I wanted to install my most common apps: adobe, itunes, antivirus, my game controllers/drivers and their profiles (saitek flight stick and profiles, nostromo n52e profiles etc..) At this point create another back up of the PC in this state. It really is a pain having to setup all my profiles and game controllers so I was thinking I could restore to a point where its all set up for me.

Yers, I think you've got it. Make a backup of youyr hard disk and put the backup file on a diff hard disk.

You need a a CD burner program like Nero or Imgburn (which is free) or such to burn the iso image (from Acronis) to the CD. Then use that CD to boot up and run ATI.

Use ATI to resotre the backup file you made to your choice of harddisks.

I was thinking that the image file burned on the hard disk is what I actually restored from. Even if I created the image file myself from within acronis and could get it to work I would still have to back up my entire HD on an external disk and navigate to the location to restore. But instead I have to use the downloaded boot media.

I burned the image file from within windows. I downloaded the ISO from my account and then right clicked the file and select burn image to disk.

Also, I could create several back up states at different points in time and save them on my external HD and restore from whichever one I want, right?

Also, if I upgrade to a solid state drive in the near future, I can restore one of the back up states to it as well?
