Win 10 cloned SSD goes to automatic repair

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

Did some searching, but didn't find a similar issue - or fix :(

TIH 2015 6613 and TIH 2014 latest same problem.  Lenovo Miix 700 tablet. i3/4G/64G SSD Win 10 home.  Using TIH bootable flash drive in both cases.

Cloning the stock SSD to a 128GB SSD.  Tried both with the target external and internal.  Using a ZTC m.2/USB 3.0 adapter.

The clone runs to completion.  (Actually 2015 locks up if the m.2 on adapter is in the 3.0 port - but that's another issue...).  On attempting to  boot the cloned drive (mounted in the Miix) it goes to automatic repair, and fails.  Digging in the log I see it fails with a corrupted C:\windows\system32\drivers\fbfsmon.sys which may or may not mean anythng.

The crazy thing is that the clone _mostly_ worked.  I can get to advanced recovery features on the installed clone.  I can successfully run a local reset on the clone and get to fully functioning windows.  Of course all installed apps are gone - which rather defeats the utiliy of cloning.

Grateful for any help or hints.

To add a possibly significant data point: the source drive uses Compact technology/WIM-boot.

[edit] Correcting my teminology.  The Miix uses Win 10 Compact technology.  Not quite the same thing as WIM boot in Win 8.1.

William, I have no direct experience with cloning tablet drives but the following KB document may offer some ideas for you to follow: 45831: Acronis Software: Unbootable System after Cloning Operation

You may like to send a PM to MVP Bobbo who has been able to help others with similar issues with tablets or some hybrid type drives, and ask if he would take a look at this post.

Thanks for the reply Steve.

For some reason I never get reply notifications  - even though I've ticked the notify checkbox - from the forum so I didn't see it right away :(

My suspicion is that the problem relates to cloning a compact OS, but that's just a WAG.  I'll try to gather more info and poke at it a little more, and ping MVP Bobbo.

Thanks and regards,

Bill

Bill, for the reply notifications, check your spam / junk folders in case they are being seen as that type of message.

Good suggestion, but no joy.  Nothing in local or server spam folders.  Been down that road before :(

I'm going to try changing my account email address and see if that resets something.

Thanks,

Bill

My best guess is that the tablets are using wimboot, instead of the normal OS install. Instead of a clone, I would try a full disk image and restore the image to the drive. I would think the results would be the same, but am wondering if wimboot and cloning are not fully supported. Would be a good test to try the backup and restore and see if the results are better, or the same.

Hey, thanks for the reply.  (still not getting notifications...)

Yes, the Miix uses a compact OS image. Similar, but not quite the same as WIM boot.  There's no separate recovery image partition.

I was just about to post an update.  Success - but I'm not entirely sure why.

Tried a different target SSD today.  The first one was a Toshiba, the new one is a Transcend.  Same size.  Installed the new uninitialized one in the Miix, ran the clone, and it booted immediately with no problems.

The only difference - other than the specific SSD - is that this time I didn't have a uSD card installed in the tablet during the clone op or on reboot.  I don't have any reason to suspect the SSD since I can do a local or via-USB-media recovery to the Toshiba and that works fine.  The Tosh also works fine as a clone target in other machines.

[edit] Adding that another difference was that VT was turned on in BIOS for the failing clone and repair, and off for the one that worked. Dunno...

Strongly suspect the presence of the uSD card as the problem trigger, but that's just a WAG at this point. Whether it's a TIH or Windows issue I have no idea.  TIH does have problems with USB 3.0 devices on the Miix but that's probably a different issue.

If I can find the time I'll try a clone to the Tosh w/no SD card installed and see how that goes.  I'm a little shy of pulling this tablet apart again - but that's what we do for science :)

Regards,

Bill
