Windows 7 running 2009 backup sleep puzzle

Thread needs solution

As title alludes to - I have just installed Windows 7 and I'm using TI 2009 build 9770, I previously used 9709 with Vista. I have been running TI 2009 with Vista since it was released and it has run flawlessly. However, after finishing all the updates and prog installations for W7 I decided to do a full back up. I left it running and went to bed, when I brought W7 out of sleep this morning I was surprised to see the backup hadn't finished. It looks like the computer went into "sleep" despite the fact the backup was still running (backing up to USB external drive). This is the first time that TI 2009 has ever done anything like this which doesn't bode well.

Anyone else come across this and if so how did you stop PC going to sleep? It's currently using balanced power saving plan.

Faust:

This may be a bug in TI - see this related post.

You can probably work around this by using Windows 7 Task Scheduler to run the backup. The Win7 scheduler is more flexible, will wake your PC to run the backup if you prefer, and will not allow sleep mode to occur until after the task finishes.

I appear to have solved this issue but I have no idea why it appears to work but work it does. If I reset the power management options and extend the Windows HD shut down time by just 15 mins then the backup runs to completion. Now many of you will say AH! that's working because by extending the HD shutdown time Acronis has simply had enough time to finish the backup - NOT TRUE. Extending the shut down time by just 15 mins would still not be enough time for a full backup to my external drive. I'm wondering if something happens during the backup whereby once it reaches a certain point it forces Windows to stay awake until Acronis completes the task???

Can you please shed more light on this?

Are you saying that [suppose] your pc is set to sleep in 15 minutes...... if you set your HDD's shut down time to 15+15 minutes = 30 mins ......your PC will not go to sleep while ATI is doing backups?

That may or may not be true any more.

Windows 7 sleep mechanism is more stringent than Vista's or Xp's.

In an update Microsoft have made a minor alteration to the Sleep function and Acronis in build 6029 (I think) made some changes to TI so it would keep Windows awake until it completed an image.

So YMMV

Hello all,

Please accept our profound apologies for the delay with the response and for the difficulties you've experienced.

Let me clarify the current situation for you.

First of all I'd like to thank bodgy for his valuable help, he's absolutely correct, Windows 7 sleep feature is different from Vista's one and this may cause the issue.

Furthermore, please note that Acronis True Image 2009 Home doesn't support Windows 7. Actually it may run on this OS, but not all Acronis features will work correctly. If you want a full compatibility with Windows 7, I may recommend you to have a look at Acronis True Image Home 2010. You can download the trial version of the new software using this link.

Anyway, as mentioned, there are 2 possible workarounds and you can find them at this forum thread (1st post).

Please let me know if you have any additional questions, I'll be glad to assist you further.

Thank you.
