Windows 8.1 Storage Spaces

Thread needs solution

I have the Acronis True Image 2015 for PC, build 6525. I have two Windows 8.1 storage spaces on my home server that I want to back up to a network drive. The backup succeeds but although I have only 900 GB of data on the two storage spaces combined the backup is 2.8 TB, which is the total size of the storage spaces. In other words, the backup seems to backup not only the data but also the empty space of the storage spaces. How do I get around this?

Thank you,

Olle

Check to make sure you do NOT have the "backup by sector" checked as to the type of backup.

I don't think ATI doesn't support Storage Spaces but I am not 100% sure. Since these are special dynamic disks, ATI reads the information of the corresponding volume (which is the total earmarked space), while the OS knows that only a portion of this is occupied (actual disk size).
Consider using a file backup instead of a disk and partition backup.

Thank you for the replies. I do not have backup by sector checked. Pat L, maybe you are right since it seems to be impossible to find any explicit references to storage spaces anywhere concerning ATI. I find this strange since SS is a key feature of windows 8. Furthermore, the feature specification explicitly say that ATI can handle dynamic disks and the software does see the occupied size when I add items to list of what I want to backup.

If anyone has any more information regarding this issue it would be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

I think it makes sense that ATI creates a backup of the full size of the Storage Spaces drive. Since the Storage Spaces drive is a virtual pool of one or more drives makes this drive arrangement dynamic in nature. Choosing a disk or partition backup would indeed then create a full size backup. Pat has a good point in using files and folders backups as they should be sized correctly to the amount of data being backed up.
