winsxs-how to handle
Has anyone tried anything unique toward handling the large part of any image of the C drive that winsx makes? I'm at 7.5GB and rising ib winsxs.

Duly noted that I should not mess with winsxs. I don't want to mess with winsxs but I do want to cut down on the size of my ATI images and I wonder if I can exclude winsxs from my image. I make an image daily and it would be sooo nice to cut them down by 7.5GB each day both from a time and a space point f view. We all have massive HD's these days so I can do this if its really necessary. I was just wondering if all those fertile minds had come up with a solution to the ATI part of the problem. I guess what I am asking is what would I have if I had to restore a partition that didn't have winsxs in it. Can I make a separate image of winsxs say once a week instead of with every daily image. What ever you can do to help me with this would be very helpful. Thanks

C:\Windows\winsxs
It is the Windows component store directory. Much of its contents is vital Windows components. Unlike early Windows versions, in Win7 much of Windows is actually implemented as reusable components, and those live in winsxs. So, Windows is not just the "Windows" directory, but is also winsxs and various other locations. If you don't backup and restore all of it, including winsxs, you won't have a working Windows installation.
The reported size is misleadingly high, due to how Windows Explorer misinterprets multiple hard links to those components. Windows Explorer overstates the size of winsxs, as it counts two hard links to a 700K file and misstates that it consumes 1400 KB of hard disk space. So, it's not nearly as large as you think it is.
If you upgraded from Windows 7 to SP-1 (as opposed to doing a fresh install from a Windows installer that already included SP-1), then you can run a utility to remove the SP-1 setup files.
Otherwise, unless you truly know what you're doing, leave winsxs alone.
