Yes, yet another NTLDR file missing post.

Thread needs solution

I hope this is the right place for my question.

Before you start pointing out the solution that is posted in this forum, i've allready read it.
It didin't fit my trouble :-/

Anyway.
I did a replicate transfer between two HDD's with acronis,
shut down the computer and unpluged the main HDD (the one that had the orginal installation)
Rebooted the computer and got the NTLDR missing error, the file is there and all that.
(moved system from PATA drive to SATA drive)

Here comes my trouble.
I have a Asus A7V600 Motherboard, and a WD raptor as my system disk now
the reason I first installed on the PATA was becouse I was unable to install to the SATA disk
in the firstplace, I did try many tricks to make it work, like integrating the SATA drivers into the
Windows XP install disk and using the A-drive F6 driver install, all with out a luck. (cant find the drive)
So I decided to use Acronis to transfer the Image of the disk to be able to install windows.

I've now tried to copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files to the new harddrive, no luck.
I've tried to change the Boot.ini file making directing it to both 0 and 1, no luck.
I've tried to repair the windows inside windows using the System File Checker Tool. no luck.

So now i'm out of all ideas, I might have done some "fixes" wrong.
so what's my next step?

I cant boot from Windows XP CD as my install disk wont find the SATA HDD
and even I was not able to find the disk in BIOS.
I have Hirens boot CD, and can load up Mini windows, and use the option to start windows with NTLDR
then I can get into Windows fine, no errors.

With regards.
Johannes.

PS.
Excuse my lack of english.

And did you check the boot order in the BIOS?

1st boot device is DVD
2nd boot device is SCSI/Onboard ATA boot Device

hmmm, how would I check that MudCrab? :-/

Boot to a partitioning program and check the partition. Hiren's BootCD should have one or more partitioning programs on it.

I assume you cloned the PATA drive to the SATA drive. What mode is the SATA controller using (this setting is in the BIOS)? You might try AHCI if something else is selected or IDE Compatible if AHCI is selected. There have been cases where booting has had problems using a certain mode, especially with certain drives. This may also make a difference with the XP installer being able to find the drive.

I certainly think everyone is putting you on the right track...
I have 2 computers with Asus motherboards (P5N-E and P5Q). One with 3 drives, one a PSATA dive and 2 Sata.....
the other computer has 3 Sata drives.
I have found that when moving drives around, one must go into the bios and make certain that all drives are visible.
In BIOS ,Go to "Boot" and then "Drives" and verify that all dives are visible... Use the "+ or -" symbol to move the proper drive into the number 1 slot for booting.... But most important...all drives MUST be visible before doing any other trouble shooting...

Hope this helps

Hi sorry for long drag on replying.

Anyway, yes I cloned from PATA to SATA, the system disk is active (according to Hiren's mini XP)
I dont see any AHCI in the BIOS so i've pasted a link to the motherboard manual, it's currently on Auto.
All that I found that might be close to AHCI was "Other ATAPI Devices"

From the manual, it looks like SATA was quite new when it was released. Boards from that time period may have more problems with compatibility than newer boards.

If the drive does not show up in the BIOS, it's not a good sign. Is any other hard drive installed in or connected to the computer?

Is the Onboard Serial ATA Boot ROM BIOS option enabled?

Does the VIA RAID have to be enabled to allow the use of the SATA ports? The manual isn't really clear on a number of things. For example, listing only the selection of IDE drives for booting.

Can you post a screenshot of what Disk Management shows for the drive(s)?

Can you post the contents of the boot.ini file?

there are 2 sata's connected to it. system drive and storage drive.
I did have the same disk connected to this motherboard many years ago, I did have to change some BIOS settings if I remember right,
but it was usable with that HDD for many years, unfortunetly I've forgotten how I did install win on that HDD.
I'll post some more info when I get back home.

Hi Johannes, if you read this, could you please post a comment to say how you got your computer going again? Cheers, Bernt
