Best Backup Strategy

Thread needs solution

Greetings!

I was wondering what the best and effective backup plan to implement for a user who is not concerned too much about personal files being backed up (since most of my personal files are saved on a separate external HD drive) but is more interested in saving applications/programs should they be lost in some unexpected event.

When I initially installed 2015 Acronis True Image, I did the initial full backup that the program asks but haven't figured out how or what action I needed to take after that (i.e. fullback, incremental or ?) given my specific needs that ensures my purchased applications are retrievable.

The reason I ask is because I have since purchased and installed additional programs since the initial full back and now wonder what action plan is needed to backup those programs should I need to restore in the future.

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

It is user choice. You need to understand the differences between the backup schemes to make an informed decision based on your individual needs. I have found that a good strategy personally is to make a full system backup after an original OS installation and after all available updates to the OS and hardware drivers has been performed. I save that backup on a few different mediums so as to have available a clean full install of the OS itself. I do the same once I have installed the basic applications that I know I am going to run. This step I actually do twice giving these backups different names and storage location folders. With the second one of these I set that up as a differential backup and run it manually whenever I make additional application installs. As you said I handle personal data backup differently as well.

The reason I use a differential backup in the above rather than an incremental is that if something goes corrupt in an incremental chain and goes unnoticed the chain will only be recoverable from backups make prior in the chain to that event. This is not true with a differential backup. Have a look at this link for more:

Thank you for the great advice, Enchantech. Will probably buy another external HDD/SSD for multiple backup options one with a clean system install and one for differential backups when I add applications in the future as you mentioned.

Cheers!
