possible to Migrate without making clean partition?

Thread needs solution

Is it possible to migrate programs only to another (larger) HD on my system?

The problem for me is that the larger disk has been in use for a while and would be difficult to clean off for a new partitioning. I tried the demo version of Migrate. Does True Image have this capability?

Do one of the Acronics products support directory level granularity for migration (say \Program Files)?

Hello Bob,

Thank you for your interest in Acronis Migrate Easy.

Let me shed some light on your concern.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to use Acronis Migrate Easy to copy a single partition to a new hard drive, since it's designed to clone the whole hard drives only.

Actually, you can'y copy just the installed software. You can copy some certain folders, such as Program Files, but most of your software won't work after that. The thing is that almost every application writes its values to the Windows Registry. So in your case you need to copy/clone the whole system drive with all software installed. You can do it by the means of Acronis True Image Home 2010. This software case back up and then restore your system partition without changing/deleting the other partitions.

You can download the trial version of the software using this link in order to see how it works on your computer. The functional limitation of Acronis True Image trial version is that you can only restore and validate an image when you run the program from the bootable media. Windows version is functional for 15 days only and it does not have any more limitations.

Please reply to this thread if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.

Hello Ilya

Thanks for your reply.. I understand the registry issues, which is why I am seeking a migrate utility.

I am now trying to use True Image Home to accomplish this: I made a fullbackup of the smaller drive. I now want to unpack this without doing a new partition...

Does the file restore feature (from a full backup) allow program files to be restored to a new disk (with registry fixups) or is this just for data type files?

Bob,

The only way of you achieving 'inserting' the smaller drive contents on to the larger is to prepare the larger drive by adding an extra partition to it, perhaps by using Disk Director, then restore the smaller drive image to the larger one in the new partition created, then if you want, use DD to merge your two partitions to one.

I assume you only want to have one drive installed in your system as otherwise booting will become a problem as your system will 'race' to decide which drive should be booted.

Be aware that any program that uses disk ID's to perform any tasks (like True Image) will need those tasks recreated once active on the new drive.
