large incremental backup

Thread needs solution

I use the latest TrueImage for backup. I do an incremental backup each day. It is typically 1.1 or 1.2 GB (which itself seems large). I was gone for the weekend and the incremental backups were still 800-900 MB. Since nothing changed while I was gone (although the computer was left on), shouldn't the incremental backups be very small?

Hello Jud,

I understand the question and will do everything possible from my side to give you a clear explanation.

There can be several reasons for large incremental backup archive. Incremental or differential backups are larger when performed after disk defragmentation or full restore. This can also happen with Acronis True Image Home 2009, or if there is a .pst file and the backup method is "fast incremental".

  • Defragmentation - An incremental or differential backup created after the disk is defragmented will be considerably larger than usual. This is because the defragmentation program changes file locations on the disk, and backups reflect these changes.
  • Creating an incremental or differential backup after recovering the full one – An incremental or differential backup created after the full one was restored will be considerably larger than usual. This is because restoring a backup archive changes file locations on the disk, and backups reflect these changes.

(!) In Windows Vista disk defragmentation is enabled by default. For information how to reschedule or disable it, see Microsoft Windows help page: Start Disk Defragmenter.

  • Using fast incremental backup method to back up partitions that have Microsoft Outlook .pst file – This issue is only with fast incremental backup. It does not occur when creating a regular incremental backup.
  • Acronis True Image Home 2009 issue – The algorithm of incremental backup archive creation is different from the regular one of Acronis True Image Echo and is similar to its fast incremental backup method. Hence, incremental backup archives in Acronis True Image Home 2009 can be considerably large.

In order to solve the issue please do the following:

After defragmenting a disk, create a new full backup of it.

After restoring, create a new full backup of what you restored.

In Acronis True Image Echo, do not use fast incremental backup method to back up partitions that have Microsoft Outlook .pst file.

For Acronis True Image Home 2009 there is, unfortunately, no solution at the moment.

The issue with Microsoft Outlook .pst file and Acronis True Image Home 2009 does not occur when backing up through the My E-mail option.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

I don't really understand what you are saying for the 4th scenario:

Are you saying that Acronis TI Home 2009 incrementals are just big regardless of the previous listed issues? Does TI Home 2010 work the same way?

OK so this make sense now. Because my default was set to weekly defrag, my backup saw this as a change each week even though there was no activity on that drive. By changing the default to monthly and doing a weekly backup I should only see a big back up after that monthly defrag then right?
