Acronis Disk Director 12 Damaged My Computer's Boot Sector.

Thread needs solution

I used Disk Director 12 to create a new partition on my hard-drive.  That worked fine and I copied a bunch of files to the new partition.

I then created two more partitions.  When the computer restarted, Windows 10 Professional would no longer boot.  The computer starts, then displays "Preparing Automatic Repair".  After a few seconds it then displays "Diagnosing Your PC".  That shows for a few seconds and then the computer reboots.  This cycle repeats itself continuously until I power down the computer.

I created a bootable USB drive with Acronis True Image 2017 installed, and then booted the computer from the USB.  I tried restoring from a full backup which took several hours (it's a 2TB drive).  The restore says it was successful but when I rebooted the computer the same cycle described above still occurred.

This has been going on for 4 days, over which time I have restored the computer 6 times.  The MBR does not restore even though I selected it for a couple of the restores.  I have tried everything I can think of but the computer is basically an expensive brick at this stage.

What I want to know is, how would Disk Director damage the boot sector and secondly, why won't the restores work?  There's not much point having backup software that won't restore a disk image when needed!

I had to download a 6GB rescue disk from Dell and completely reinstall Window 10.

Now I have a working computer but no data.  I have tried restoring files from within Windows using True Image but it only restores some.  So now I've booted from the Acronis rescue media on USB but it is abysmally slow.  When I prompted me to select a destination location, it took 20 minutes for the dialog to appear after clicking the link.

The LED on external hard drive the backup is stored on has been busily flashing but the restore progress bar has been on 0% for 3 hours now.

I don't know what the problem is with TI 2017 because I've used earlier versions to restore data (when installing new hard drives) and I've never had these sorts of problems.  I have been using Acronis products for several years but I think it's time to find a different company.

Steve, operations with disks and partitions, including partition creation, resizing, system recovery and others, may fail if there is a problem with the environment: corrupted file system, bad sectors, issues with disk controller and other problems that may reveal itself only in certain situations and show no symptoms during normal system usage.

Even though you have rebuilt Windows, I would recommend you still checking the hardware health as described in this post.

Wow- just learned I can not shrink the C:Drive with Arcomis 12 on windows 10 like I could do with Win 7 and Acronis 11.  What POS- asking for refund

Hello Bob,

C: drive can be shinked and expanded on Windows 10 just like on any other supported operated system. Let us check what could have gone wrong on your case: open a support ticket.

Hello,

It's too late for you, but I have had the same problem on a Dell laptop computer : impossible to shrink Windows 10 partition with DD12 B3270, and even with Windows Disk Management.

The problem was the presence of (non movable files).

To shrink Windows partition, you ahe to delete all your Windows Restauration Points.
