ATI 2019: Recovery failed Unabled to lock the disk

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I'm trying to recover a Windows 10 (UEFI) boot partition using acronis rescue media.

However, I'm getting prompted by the message "Unable to lock the disk. Boot your computer from a linux based bootable media.

My Windows 10 64bit installation runs in UEFI mode, the drive partition layout is GPT.

I've tried to create a rescue media using these options:

  • - simple
  • - advanced
  • - WinPE
  • - Windows recovery envireonment (recomended)
  • - advanced - Windows 10 ADK

But non of these media helps to recover the boot partition.

Also in BIOS I disabled fast boot and Windows secure mode, which didn't helps either.

61632: Acronis True Image 2019: how to create bootable media did not help me to fix the issue.

Appreciate any help on how to troubleshoot. Thanks Bodo

Bodo, please see forum topic: Unable to lock the disk.  where this issue has been raised by other users previously and solutions have been offered.

The core solutions are as follows:

Turn off Windows Fast Start / disable Hibernation - you can use Powercfg -h off from an Administrator level command prompt.

Perform a full shutdown of Windows by pressing & holding the Shift key while clicking on shutdown - you can also use Shutdown /p /f from an Administrator level command prompt.

The above assumes that you are still able to boot into Windows to the desktop.

If not, then the simplest solution is to wipe the target drive if this is also the Windows boot drive, as doing this will also remove the hibernation file that causes the disk to be locked.  The first action of a disk recovery would do the same once it can be started!

If you can get to a WinPE Command prompt from the rescue media, then you can use the following commands to wipe the drive.

diskpart
list disk      (identify the correct disk from the list shown, i.e. disk 0 should be the boot disk).
select disk 0    (make sure you have the correct disk number here!)
clean
exit

Thanks Steve for your assistance.

I followed your steps to perform a full shutdown of Windows (Shift key + shutdown).

This time I booted from a rescue media (type: Windows recovery environment) and followed the recovery assistant to the last screen without beeing prompted "Unable to lock the disk" message.

Also I was able to do a recovery by booting from a linux based media, even without doing a full shutdown of Windows.

I will try again this procedure to do a full recovery with these options to see if it works.

Thanks again

Bodo

I saw the " Unable to lock the disk. Boot your computer from a Linux- based bootable media, and then try again " the other day when I was installing a brand new SATA SSD in a Windows7 Pro machine. I had powered down Windows7 Pro installed the SSD and booted up with an Acronis 2020 Rescue Media disk. I went to clone the entire rotational hard drive to the SSD and got the message. Luckily I had a Linux Rescue Media Disk with me and it had no such issue and performed the cloning.
