True Image 2021 Slows My Computer To A Crawl (useless)

Thread needs solution

I just upgraded to the new version from 2021 true image and the new version and Cyber Protection Agent was consuming my hard drive at 100% My computer was basically useless. I verified this with the Win10 build-in task manager and resource manager. I was able to uninstall 2021 and reinstall in 2020. Very disappointed in the new product and experience. My computer is now back to normal. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a fix?

Charles, welcome to these public User Forums.

There have been some serious issues with ATI 2021 as evidenced by topics posted in the 2021 forum, these have included performance issues caused by the new Protection features!

Normally, I would expect that the performance would have settled down and improved after any initial protection updates have been downloaded and system scan performed, but you may have needed to restart Windows to bring about the improvement.

At this point, I would urge you (and any other users seeing critcal issues with 2021) to submit Feedback direct to Acronis to register your concerns and make known your disappointment in the impact of the new features introduced!

Please hold off reinstalling 2021 at this time until such time as Acronis have produced at least a further new build to fix the major issues, and keep an eye on the 2021 forum for evidence that no new issues are being reported by users!

I am a new user of True Image. I had exactly the same problem when I upgraded to True Image 2021 from 2020. I submitted feedback to Acronis. I must say that things got better after the initial period when my computer, like yours, was basically useless. That was a couple of weeks ago. Since then, True Image 2021 (with Cyber Protection activated) has been happily chugging away in the background and performing as expected. Other than the initial resource usage problem, I like the product.

Thank You Steve Appreciate the information.
I did submit feedback to Acronis Yesterday and also got a hold of support. Ultimately i decided to pass on 2021 and downgrade back to 2020. After the initial 2021, my computer was restarted and the problem still existed for hours after that. Best Regards

I also had the same problem with the Cyber Protection Agent on my windows.  I just stopped all protection.

Hello,

Can you explain how this was done? Thanks

If you go to the protection tab, and the very bottom there is a button "Pause", right click on it and one of the options is to disable. This is OK, but sometimes the pause button is greyed out, presumably because there is an active task, possible a virus scan. In my case the only solution was to uninstall ATI 2021, then reinstall and a quickly as possible disable everything.

Ian

I just disabled it in the program itself.  At least it is no longer 100% consuming my hard drive. I am watching and so far everything is fine.

Today I upgraded my old laptop, a Lenovo Flex 15, from ATI 2020 to ATI 2021.  The uprgrade took approximately 20 minutes to fully complete from start of downloading the new version over a WiFi connection to fully updated malware definition database.

This laptop was built in 2013, has an i7 4510 CPU and has had upgrades of the HDD (to Samsung 860 EVO SSD) and the RAM from (4GB to 16B G. Skill DDR3 PC12800).

Only one time during the upgrade to ATI 2021 did I witness 100% CPU activity for a brief 30 seconds during the definition install.  After that completed the machine settled down the a very normal 12 to 15% CPU load and 20 to 27% memory use as was the case for the rest of the install.

If your install acts differently, open a support case.  I would encourage users to review the specs on their machines however as PC's close to the minimum requirements of hardware will not exhibit this type of performance.

I am having the same problem. The "cyber protection" makes my computer useless. I have a 2018 MacBook Pro and am urunning MacOs 10.15.7. (Big Sur is not yet released).

This needs to be fixed or I will have to remove the cyber protection. The cure can't be worse than the disease.

How did you go backward to remove 2021. I contacted support (using Chat feature). Waiting for supports response was just as slow as waiting for the cyber security. I finally had to leave wai for oting for the chat to happen to do other urgent tasks.

I simply uninstalled 2021 altogether and reinstalled my downloaded 2020 version. That was it.  If you don't have a 2020 version request a copy from support. I normally save my downloads and it was in the 2020 version when I purchased.

You can download the latest build of ATI 2020 without going through ATI support:

Acronis True Image 2020 for PC ( Build #  25700, 601.5 MB )

 Acronis True Image 2020 for Mac ( Build #  25760, 217.9 MB )

Thank you to both replies. That will solve the problem.

For reference, the Acronis Product Updates page has download links to the installers for all versions of ATI going back to ATI 2009...!

Same problem here (Cyber Protection consumes high CPU/RAM) Fix this asap as PCs become unresponsive

Hi,

I have the same exact issue with True Image 2021, build 34340, which is the latest version available. It bogs the machine down so bad with high disk activity that it can't even do the backup. This seems kind of dumb.

I have been searching for solutions and deeply involved in this problem for several days with absolutely no luck. I will have to downgrade to True Image 2020 to do a backup.

I can kill the process Managed Machine Service Mini as advised in some threads here, and that stops the activity, but True Image won't recognize the external USB hard drive to do the back up to when that is done.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled and done a huge amount of tweaks and other things which has done absolutely nothing to change this behavior. Very dissatisfied with this product. It had worked so well for years until now.

Update: True Image 2020 works just fine. No trace of the problems seen with True Image 2021.

Question:  When will an update for True Image 2021 be available? The current version build 34340 is not usable.

Acronis does not publish expected dates for the release of new builds. Sometimes individual users are given advance access to beta build to see if a particular issues is solved, but that is unusual and can be subject to non-disclosure requirements.

New build is released when Acronis engineers think that the issues that are supposed to be resolved in the release candidate have in fact been resolved. Sometimes they get it wrong, and sometimes they are correct but miss new issues, particularly when features are evolving such as Cyber Protection. The latte happened with the initial release of ATI 2021 which had features not in the prior beta some of which introduced significant issues for users.

Sorry I cannot offer any timeline, which in all likelihood would not be met.

It appears nothing has been done to resolve this particular problem since the initial release of 2021. The product is basically unusable. I also submitted a support ticket as soon as I installed it and realized that there was an issue when 2021 was released back in Sept. This is not a bug but a major problem with the BS Cyber Protection that in my opinion does not need to be included in the software.  Its also concerning and possible that 2021 was not properly tested before the release. Testing it would have revealed the issues. Don't make excuses for a problem that still plagues the software.

Charles, the MVP's are not employed or paid by Acronis so have no influence over the design or the release of ATI versions etc!

Please submit Feedback direct to Acronis using the tool provided in the Help section of the GUI to make them aware of how unhappy you are with ATI 2021 and the unwanted extra protection features introduced with the same!

Same here. ATI 2020. Had to turn off protection due to slow performance. In addition, startup time for the application is very very slow.  Probably going to uninstall 2021.

Acronis TrueImage2021 was KILLING my brand new Alienware computer. I have a 2TB C-drive (M.2drive) a 4TB D-drive (for Programs and Games) a 2TB E-drive for Documents and a RAID drive for Archive purposes.
Acronis made it impossible to install because it was scanning all my data.
I have since rolled back to 2020 and crippled the active protection.

BUT

Now it has crippled my moms computer with just one hard drive to be backed up to an external.

ACRONIS!

Make this protection OPTIONAL

I want images of my hard drives... nothing more!

Patrick, welcome to these public User Forums.

Please submit Feedback directly to Acronis (use the tool provided in the GUI Help section) and complain about the imposition of these new protection features plus ask for your vote to be added to the Acronis internal change request: TI-213392 Allow installation without Antimalware components

Thank you Steve for the welcome.

I have contacted Acronis 3 times with this issue (twice just with 2021).

Unfortunately, I have no more time to dedicate to this matter. I have wasted 40 hours of my life on my last go-round with tech support. The language barrier as well as the time difference their tech support resides is infuriating.

I have purchased the family (5 license 2021) and over the Christmas Holiday, Acronis crippled 4 of the 5 (I had already rolled back to 2020 on my alienware machine.

Sadly my post was just to "add one more" person that has ripped Acronis from all my machines and the machines of my family. I also will be recommending to my work to avoid Acronis for the foreseeable future.

Hopefully Acronis learns that while simplicity is good. Enforced simplicity is NOT.

I want to pick and choose which components that are installed, Not install all the features and then disable what I do not want. AND where to install them. (I do not want Acronis on my C-drive...3rd party apps go on my D-drive)

I do not want nor need Malware protection, Randsomeware protection, click jacking, bitcoin mining protection or anything else they may come up with.

I want disk images. JUST disk images!

Acronis will never learn until and unless people like me take their money elsewhere.

I wish you well Steve!  Have a Merry Christmas

I wish Acronis all the best, but especially the wisdom and humility to get back to what made them worthy of my business for the past 10 years.

Cheers

Recommended Acronis for Business since >10 years but due to failure with consumers will quit partnership

Hi,

I have just uninstalled True Image 2021 from my PC as it made it unusable because of the Cyber Protection.  I tried turning off the Cyber Protection but the software still appeared to go through all my drives when I turned the PC on, making it as good as lock out!  Is there any way I can go back to True Image 2020.  The last previous True image I purchased before 2021 was 2018.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mel

Hello Mel,  I know you can transfer your licenses back to previous versions. I did it with a couple of my computers.

In fact I have been toying with the idea of rolling my version before they started the anti-randsomware stuff.

You will probably need to go through the online management console to reconfigure your licenses.

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the info, I will give it a try.

Cheers,

Mel

After spending days trying to track down why my two laptops are sooo sloooow I have removed Acronis 2021 v35860. I have used Acronis True Image since 2009 with no problems, so it was a long way down on my list of possible causes. But there we are: What a disaster of an update!

I can go back to 2020, so I may have to do that although hopefully my next planned backup will be on 1st Feb.

One question: Is the 2020 version compatible with restoring from the backup using 2021? (Probably safest to do a new backup if and when I reinstall v2020.)

I hope when Acronis resolve the cause they will email registered users, otherwise with True Image uninstalled some users may never know of the usable update.

David, you should recreate your backups with ATI 2020 if you revert back to that version though the backups created by 2021 may be still compatible.  Acronis have only ever 'guaranteed' backwards compatibility of backup archives as per the document in my signature.

I would suggest checking in on this 2021 forum to see if further new builds are released rather than expecting to see an email from Acronis.  The forum moderator will post notice of new builds in the forum, as shown by the current 'sticky' topics.

Beyond this please see my post #25 above and submit Feedback to Acronis.

Mel, you cannot normally downgrade to an earlier version of ATI unless you have a valid license / serial for that earlier version.  The only exception may be if you have a subscription that started with the earlier version.  I suspect that any transfer of license from ATI 2021 to an earlier version such as 2020 would have to be agreed by and performed by Acronis.

Hi Patrick & Steve,

I contacted Acronis Support (very helpful lady) and she set it up for me to go back to ATI 2020 (Backup is running now!).  Thanks to both of you for your help.

Cheers,

Mel

As I suspected, Thank you for your comments.

When is True Image 2021 going to be fixed?  It is still is unusable. Takes  5-10 minutes to boot and locks up on for a few minutes when you do anything within the software

Subscription credits should be issued to uses,

i finally give up and plan on reinstalling the 2020 version

Richard, have you opened a support case and reported this issue direct to Acronis?  If not, then please do so before reverting to an older version.

Even if you stop all protection, all the related services are still running and eating resources.

Denis, welcome to these public User Forums.

With all protection stopped / turned off permanently, yes all the related services are still active in the background but they should not be eating resources!  If you have evidence to show that this is happening, then please report it to Acronis as a bug!

Does anyone know if the problems with Acronis True Image 2021 have been resolved yet?

I am still back using 2020 and am not too impressed being several months in to a useless upgrade I paid for - as I assume are many others.

The problem(s) remain. There were 2 versions of Acronis TI 2021 released - 34340 and 35860. They both have the issue, whereas any version of Acronis TI 2020 does not. The 2021 versions are completely unusable for me for three of my machines which are all Lenovo laptops . These have been reverted to the latest 2020 version and are fine. My Lenovo desktop does not have the "thrashing" disk problem and is running fine with either of the 2020 versions.

I decided to change my ATI 2021 test machine to remove the Avast anti-virus program and instead turn on Acronis Protection.

This is a very old 2010 laptop system running an Intel i3-370M at 2.4 GHz, 4 GB memory and a 250 GB WDC HDD.

What I am finding is that the system is running pretty much as it did before. While running a full scan the disk was at 100%, but in normal operation the disk activity was low with periodic short spikes.

I'm going to leave it this way. But that does not change my opinion that the Protection should be a separate install such that if it's not desired it does not exist at all.

I am still sing 2020. I also feel the same as i am paying the subscription and can take advantage of the upgrade.  I wish they would have just stuck with the backup product instead of puting in this protect app.  Has anyon put in a support ticket? I did when i first started this thread.  Support never mentioned that the 2021 product was fixed.

What a pity. Build 39184 is available and still these problems havn't been fixed. Shame on Acronis.

Same here,  I tried the latest release and still same issues.  It’s hangs on every click ,  useless

2020 working fine

I have just noticed that a new version of 2021 has been released (Update 5 has been released. Build number for Win: 39216)

The info does not suggest that the 'slowed to a crawl problem' has been resolved, so, personally, I am not brave enough to try it.

Me either. I received a link to do a customer satisfaction survey recently about the Acronis True Image 2021 product. I let them have it. Hopefully, others have received it a completed it telling them how the product has affected the system. I told them to remove it from True Image altogether.

As mentioned by Steve Smith, i reported these problems to customer support. These asked me to perform a chkdsk und send back some process monitoring files and system reports. So i delivered them the specified information. Therefore, i installed and tested Build 39216. (No) Big suprise: the problems are still NOT fixed.

I told them to refund me the price for my last update to True Image 2021, as in the meantime i switched from Acronis to "EaseUS Todo Backup Home 13.1".

Let's wait, if i get my money back.

latest build is working much better, still has slight freeze but it’s at least seems usable for now

Lucky you, i was assigned an Agent whicht tries to call me always after 22:00 (looks like he is based in different timezone w/ German Support Contract) From one day to the next, TrueImage cannot find license anymore and funfact: even when Active Protection is disabled, (false positive) elements got quarantined.
